  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

No Horizon tool/gyro - I miss this, shooting on sand bags or from vehicles. I hope this can be added.

Only one black shade user preset - this is a big deal, I always need 2 on set - normal 180 degree + high speed shutter for slowmo/vfx, or for natural history dusk/dawn cold temp and mid-day hot temp. I hope this can change too.

Can not assign shutter up/down to the user side panel - super annoying to have to use menu.

lack of physical buttons - only 1 front record button can be customized. if the rf control ring is enabled that will help, but missing those side ssd buttons and evf buttons from monstro. zoom toggle, peaking toggle, pre-record toggle, shutter up/down, iris up/down - too many things you don't want to have to go into the menu for.

Overlays not adjustable - on monstro I like to have picture fill full frame and overlay in that just histogram/posts + timecode + lens data- everything else is just distracting. Cant customize the overlay at all right now, and no auto-hide menu

Lens data - distance/IS not displayed on overlay

No Reduced judder preview, no 48hz monitoring for 24

No auto-peaking - rotating focus to enable peaking

magnify only 1 level -but great that its instant, and works during record

no gio scope

Timecode does not default to TOD, you have to manually jam every power up - very strange.

GPI does not seem to be enabled, not in menu. Jarred mentioned using the cameras with a motion sensor for camera trap style functionality. I was interested in trying this out, but dont see how it could work, there is no way to configure what the GPI does

Can't speak to all of those, some are my requests as well!

Two things I can say, the DSMC3 7" has 4X assignable buttons on the left side, which will help in regards to having operator-side custom keys. The XL does indeed have more keys however.

V-Raptor is nothing like previous RED cameras when it comes to temperature. Whole different cooling and heating system. New fan, new heatsinks, and a thermoelectric cooler. Thus far I haven't found a situation where needed to perform a calibration during the course of a day. The temperature is regulated differently for sure.

+1 for Gioscope

+1 for an additional magnify strength

+1 for a lot of what you're asking. I think some of that is obviously coming.

:iagree:
Same issue on Komodo. It becomes a headache when shooting.

Really hope this is rethought soon in an update.

Ill have to check but I think when I turned the TC from internal to external it held TOD TC. Don't ask me why but for some reason it did. Maybe I was lost in the menu and touched something I didn't intend to. or Edge Code i belevie

Hey Russ,

I did try this but the timecode still reset to 00:00:00 after reboot.
Definitely let us know if you can reproduce what you mentioned above.

Just tried it again and the only way to get time code is to press the Jam Timecode to TOD button each time you turn on the camera. Strange but somewhere in the camera is the TOD and when you hit this button it brings up TOD on the time code but to have TC on startup seems to be a no go at this time. Im sure when we get out of Beta that will all change along with a bunch of other things were all finding out.
Honestly this is probably one of the most functional out of the box cameras of first generation we have had from RED. I remember all the beta firmwares on the Red One and the model X and just about everything else so Im accepting of some of this. Ill bet shortly we will have an update with a lot of these little issues fixed and then well all be finding others.. Hopefully no.
Remember that these are the first few and what a an amazing accomplishment it was to have this camera now.

Thanks for checking again on your end. That's pretty much what I and others are experiencing.
True- that the software is still beta.
Odd though that the camera has been out for this long and an issue like this still exists.
I'm sure things are quite busy at RED and the engineers and programmers have their work cut out for them.
I trust RED to read these comments and put it on their feature list.
We'll see.

What I'm missing at this point is the option for going under-cranked with the fps.
Could be that I'm just to stupid to find out, but I'm doing a lot of car work and 21/22fps is a must on this one. Anyone figured this out already?

Did not know that is normal for Komodo, that is a big step backwards from DSMC2.

If you have not, please email featurerequests@red.com and let Red know about the timecode problem so we can get it back to how it should work.

Same issue on Komodo. It becomes a headache when shooting.

Some of you will remember that when the DSMC 2 cameras first came out that a lot of these same functions were ether not available on the camera for a couple updates to the firmware.
Im very confident that RED would not release a camera in todays market that had less functionality available then the previous cameras. That just doesn't make sense. That said there might be some functions that were not used by many that might get pushed until later updates. Or refined.

Time codeis probably number 1 on the update list if not a separate update just for that. Along with different frame rates.
Has anyone tried with a TC locket box or some external source for TC on the camera. Or does anyone have a Cable that will allow us to input TC from an external device.

>>No Horizon tool/gyro

Maybe there is no gryo in Raptor like on DSMC2?

when I try to export the gyro data like you get from Monstro using 54 redline --printMeta from the R3d its just 0s

495,00:07:36:17,450049568,4.500000,2630,24,0.000000,0.000000,0.000000,0.000000,0.000000,0.000000,

don't use komodo, but tried a komodo r3d just to see, same, just 0s.

In both the Komodo manual and the Raptor manual it says:
"NOTE: The timecode is reset when the camera is turned off, unless an external power source remains connected and powered."

On Raptor, even with a battery or DC in connected, the TOD timecode resets to 0 after camera is powered back up. Seems like it should not per the manual.
Does the Komodo TOD timecode reset even if a battery remains connected?
