Miss Reef 2015 RED BTS

Tits and ass in the official thread, really RED?

I was always very put off by the whole military jargon implemented by Red - bomb this, battle this, tactical that… camoflage nets as store decor. And, before you start throwing the patriotism thing in my face, remember the USA is not the only nation contibuting forces to Afghanistan and other places of conflict. As for myself, I have done two tours with the UN peace-keeping forces in Lebanon in the 80’s, so feel free to park your "put your money where your mouth is" -comments at the door.

Now I’m quietly wondering how the female DP’s of the world feel about RED.

Kind regards

Joachim

Joachim at times I would agree with your thoughts on t 'n' a but honestly the world is a lot bigger now and most of us keep an open mind.

Men won't change ;-)

And neither will RED, sadly. It really seems like if it's not female models, extreme sports or Hollywood features, it's of zero interest to the company.

Ditto, 100%. It has become almost a caricature of itself.

Hmm I dont agree but I get the point and at times yes its out there (regarding sex).

However I see a lot of posts regarding drama, thrillers and adventures as well as docs.

Its just these skin tones ones seem to bring out the vocal ones.

Nice footage but I am curious why all the models faces are obscured or not filmed?

A matter of style maybe?

They are not obscured in the BTS.

Im also curious if some or all are pro surfers.

Hey Scott sorry you feel this way.. but you have it backwards. We are inclusive, not exclusive. We value all markets and segments that our customers work in, and we love showcasing great images shot with our camera no matter what is in front of the lens.

Historically all REEF ads have been strictly about a girls butt as the focal point of the ad, with a small product shot in the bottom corner. I imagine its keeping with tradition, or they didn't get the rights to use these girls likenesses in anything other than the calendar. :)

best example of skin tones I seen so far.

I should have worded that better. I'm not sure there's a lack of interest, but very little diversity makes it onto the RECON forum. Looking back over 2014, it's all been Hollywood film & episodic TV, sports, female beauty shots, advertising involving sports, documentaries with guns and motorcycles, a celebrity music video (with guns and semi-naked women), and two nice examples of nature photography. "Great images" are not limited to these genres. I've been on the forum for several years, and this is pretty typical. Notably absent: product photography, high-end industrial work, documentaries that aren't about nature, sports or war, anything from a feminist or gay perspective EVER, anything that I'd loosely call 'personal work' ...

RED has always presented a certain corporate persona: the cigar-chomping military swagger, an NAB booth featuring tattooing in progress, an NAB runway show of fashion models, a love of all things skaterdude, turbocharged, in-your-face. And that's fine. Corporate posturing is merely that. But if it extends to what kinds of customer work can get onto the user forum, that's sad. Perhaps nobody working in other genres ever submits; I don't know. But if that's true, there's a reason for it.

Scott-

To me RED is a boundary pushing company that creates boundary pushing products. 99.99% of the work featured by RED is just that- boundary pushing. I am sure that somewhere someone has a CRAZY tabletop product photography business utilizing RED to capture some amazing images. Someone else uses the same camera for corporate videos, another for infomercials... The reality is, while that is the source of someones livelihood, it might not be the most exciting thing to feature. I have used my RED to capture things of this nature, the stuff that I don't put into my reel, but pays the bills. This is why my reel is full of cars sliding around racetracks and not of these other types of imagery. I use exciting content to show what I can do, reel people in and book more work. If I sent these corporate style videos to an advertising agency, they would close the video after the first few seconds.

As someone that lives and works in the world of "skater dude" or "extreme" I understand why RED uses exciting, sexy (figuratively and literally) footage to showcase what their cameras can do. For all other uses there is a whole section devoted to people that want to share their content.

Well, i am extremely interested in people who are using this camera for paying clients who are combining motion and stills .
Maybe it's just not for everyone?
Thanks,
Tim

As a vegetarian pacifist I always loved the para-militant and rebellious esthetic of RED. The photo section of my website is called shoot to kill.
There is something to be said about military industrial design, it is made to last and its reduced to its most basic and straight forward functionality.

Most of my fellow female DP's I work or hang out with, have never expressed an issue with RED's aesthetic.
But they are all unanimously annoyed by stereotypes that women like everything in pink.

As for the tits and ass. People like to see each other naked, main reason why the population of this planet buys cameras and why the internet is so popular.
There is a very small percentage of people that use cameras purely for artistic purposes and even then it involve sometimes people with not much on.

No pun intended. Cheers. ; )

Funny discussion. :P

I never saw the company that way. RED builds the greatest cameras on this planet, made 4k come true, made real cine-cameras affordable. RED has the best customer-service and company->customer-communication i have ever seen, they're calling their customers family and they're serious about that. Thats what really matters.

What gets shared by Jarred in the RECON-section is just what he likes to share with us, personal preferences included and totally welcome. Great looking footage, maybe made by friends and partners, all in all on a more private than "official" level. I never assumed there is a way to "submit" something to get "featured" here.

The official thing is the RED Collective, and of course there is a whole "Shot on RED" section, where everyone can share stuff.

Seriously, i don't see a problem here and nothing to be sad about.

I get that; I absolutely do... and I agree to a point, as someone who does a lot of 'bill-paying work' and documentaries that are worthwhile but not especially visually interesting. But to go back to Jarred's point that I was commenting on, he said RED loves showcasing "great images." That's not necessarily the same thing as "exciting." And personally, I find a beautifully-lit, interestingly-composed product shot (or anything) infinitely more exciting than yet another car doing yet another drift in slow motion. Sure, they're eye-catching. But unless you're pulling shallow focus, there's nothing photographically challenging about that; I've shot them. It's the driver's skill that makes them interesting, not mine. (That said, you do have some lovely shots on your reel!)

The RECON thread isn't an ad agency, nor is it a space where customers showcase their own work looking for clients. It is, in a sense, the official voice of RED. It says, "This is what we think is worth showing." Do I get it that they're going to promote the feature films shot on RED? Sure... they're proud, and rightly so. But for a company that started as "the Hollywood-grade camera for the rest of us" -- a company that proclaims itself as inclusive -- a company that says it's all about great images -- its idea of "great images" seems mind-numbingly narrow to me.

Look, RED is synonymous in many circles with revolution - in 2007 they helped usher in a new era of digital cinematography when they crashed on the scene with the RED ONE. And they've been pushing boundaries - and the industry - ever since. It's part of the appeal of being invested in RED. Everything comes a certain swagger, a certain bravado, a certain attitude. It's like asking a trained, world class athlete to be sedate. Most are naturally highly charged and ambitious.

That said, I'm positive RED cameras have penetrated an incredibly wide market. I too would love to see the full spectrum of what's being created and shot on RED: gay, straight, young, old, foreign, domestic, you name it. It's a big world out there, with infinite pov's, and I'm looking forward to seeing them all!
