  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mirror flares

I am curious as to why my 16 and 50 mm lenses do not show this. I want to research the differences between those two lenses and the 20, 32, and 85. Ill record my process here. Thanks to all for sharing these great suggestions and explanations.

This is due to different optical paths between several very different designs. The light bouncing back into the lens from the OLPF gets "lost" and doesn't make its way back to the sensor to create a duplicate image.
BTW... this isn't an issue specific to RED or even to digital cameras. Reflections such as these have been around for a loooong time. The same thing happens with film as well.

I really think we can over analyse things like this. If it occurs in major feature films shot on film or digital which respected directors, DOPS, editors, graders and producers who've seen the footage a thousand times have passed into the final edit, then it's obviously not a problem for anyone except ourselves over analysing footage!

Haha! Yes, I guess I have done some overanalyzing. Minute 12:18 mark of Coco Before Chanel. You see a bunch of brightly exposed candles in the scene and these are causing the same flares that I've been seeing. AND these are listed as being shot on Panavision, probably on PRIMOs. So if it happens on Primo lenses and Panavision cameras..... I guess it's a pretty normal thing.
