  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey, does anyone know if there are any plans for longer focal lengths for the Mini-Primes? More choice/focal range might sway me towards the 2/3 interchangeable over the fixed. At this point I can't really see what other advantages it has? (unless you own or have access to good 16mm glass)

Aren't the mini primes something like this in s35 equivalent:

28mm
35mm
50mm
85mm
150mm

If you need longer than 150mm you could grab a canon/nikon adapter and then.. due to crop factor, the sky would pretty much be the limit.

You have the advantage of a fully mechanical lens and a faster aperture (T1.5).

Keep in mind that the S16 lenses that Zeiss and Cooke recently made are all in the shorter focal lengths, the logic being that if you need a long focal length, you could just use an S35 prime at that point.

The only problem with ths vis a vis the mini-primes is that would require a mount change since they are not standard PL mount.

Zeiss extended their ultra 16 range up to 50mm... in my opinion if you are shooting with S16(ish) chip they really are worth it.

I'd like to know exactly what they translate to. Using the mini prime figures sounds like it would get confusing.

If you're familiar with 2/3" cameras, then you should be familiar with how focal lengths relate to this sensor size.

That said, the mini primes will be available in 6, 8, 16, 25 and 50mm focal lengths.

The 2/3" Scarlet would have a "crop factor" of about 2.46X relative to S35 and of about 3.55X relative to FF35. So the 6mm prime on the wide end would be the equivalent of about a 14mm on an S35 camera or a 21mm on a FF35 camera. They definitely have the wide end covered well. For super-wide, it would be nice to see a 3mm fisheye and perhaps a 3.5 to 4.5mm rectilinear at some point.

A longer focal length would definitely be of interest, but I don't see that fitting into the form factor of the mini primes. As it is, the 50mm is already constricting itself in the mini-prime form factor and has become a T2.9. The 50mm would be the equivalent of about a 125mm on S35. I suppose if one wants longer, there are always other S16 lenses or even SLR lenses. But that would require a mount swap or perhaps a mount adapter. Using B4 mount lenses is an option too, but since they are designed for 3-chip cameras, the mount for these on a RED camera will have optical correction and will introduce a bit of magnification as well as light loss. But still a good option for those who have access to such lenses.

Hey shallow dof fans. How does a 25mm f/.95 sound? See here: http://www.cameraquest.com/voigt_m43.htm
A good reason for Red to offer a micro 4/3 adapter for Scarlet cinema. Probably several good reasons as this lens line develops.
And maybe a manufacturer for mini-primes if one is still needed.

PL Mount Scarlet

PL Mount Scarlet

Have not seen any mention anywhere about possibility of Scarlet available in PL mount. Does anyone recall if this has been covered?
Thanks

Lens mounts are interchangeable for the cinema version. PL mount is definitely one of the options.
