  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Michael Mann’s Public Enemies

I was SO PISSED when I saw that he did the "video" style like Collateral and Vice. What the hell, Mann?! It's a period piece!! That video look feels like it's going to be really distracting...

The story looks great! Just pissed he didn't spring for film like a real movie...

Gotta say I agree completely. The F23 looks just like film- unless you turn off the shutter which is the parts of that trailer that look video-ish. It's obvious he's enjoying the higher speed shooting but at a cost of aesthetics. Parts of that trailer look like an '80s BetaSP video that's been Filmlooked. Hope he goes back to film some day or leaves the dang shutter on.

I liked the trailer and will see the movie but the entire time I felt it also had a tad bit of the video aesthetic. I was not a fan of the Vice look at all but know a lot of people who loved it. What ever works best the piece, fine...but I think for the period film its a bit distracting as well.

I'm looking forward to this! I'm glad Michael Mann is carrying his style over into period films. Originally he was slated to do something else with Cruise (a WW II movie about a downed pilot) and I was hoping he would shoot that in this style. Only Michael Mann should be allowed to make video look as bad as it can though. He does it on purpose!

I agree. I just saw the trailer and litteraly came on here to post about how video it looked when I saw this thread. I actually quite enjoyed Collateral and Miami Vice, but this looks so much more stylized it might be a shame. Then again, the look is obviously what he's after, the 'in your face' video-y look combined with the stylized period setting is a bold move.. I guess I'll reserve judgement until I see the film, it'll either work.. or it wont

Forget videoish, filmish or whatever, that looks like it has potential to be a good movie.

This approach kinda sunk Vice IMHO- it didn't look stylish so much as low-budget at times. Script issues as well but I found the look distractingly videoish. I hope Public Enemies will be strong enough script and acting I won't notice the smeary video. :) But I do very much miss the Mann of Heat. That's about the best shot action film of all time.

I didn't find it distracting really. The 720p version on Apple def looked way over sharpened, but I'm sure the release print will look better.

Honestly I'm too much of a Mann, Depp, Bale fan to care too much about how they shot it.

Mr. Mann isn`t a guy that paints by numbers. He makes and breaks his own rules.

How else to distinguish oneself when dealing with a genre & period thats been stripped mined? To be strapped down to a pre-ordained "Look" kind of defeats the purpose of revisiting at all ... Why revisit if not to find something new or that was previously missed?

At any rate it looks like a real fun movie that will go well with a big ol`bucket of pop corn.

DogDay.

The film looks great and I don't mind it being shot digitally, aka Benjamin Button looked almost flawless (in MY opinion) and never distracted the eye! They seemed to want to achieve a look that was closer to the aesthetics of film and to me that film did have a certain feeling to it but it was a great artistic choice.

It seems he (Mann) wanted this look intentionally, by turning off the shutter. He made an artistic choice the same as using pro mist filters or whatever, lighting in a certain style or going handheld or shooting only on a dolly.

I feel that a period film, again this is MY opinion, does not lend itself well to a so called "video" look. Imagine The Godfather having this "look"? Some may like it... I felt the look in Miami Vice was justified by the manner in which he chose to shoot the story and how he wanted to tell it, so for ME it was not a problem. Collateral was a film that did not really do much for me story wise and the digital thing never bothered me.

I only posted here to comment specifically on that particular aspect based on seeing a web trailer. I'll reserve more judgment until I have seen the film, which does look awesome, and shooting digitally does not alter that.

I should add that my question, and purpose in posting was not about the F23 at all, rather I asked if people felt that a "video" look (regardless of the source camera) suits a period piece?

People are allowed to feel what they want and have their opinion...:gun:
