  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Meet Mr.T... in full 5k.

While the image is beautifully noise-free, I can't help noticing significant debayer artifacts:

[crop from top-left corner attached, shown at 200%, exaggerated (a lot) with contrast]

This doesn't really bother me, as I intend to resample in post down to 2K or HD, but I'd be interested in hearing RED's comments on this - was this just a 'quick & dirty' debayer?

Also, at 5220x2740, this shot appears to show the entire S35 chip area, including the masked 64x16 frame (which I understand is for calibrating black levels?). This leaves a 5092x2708 active image area - slightly less than the 5120-pixel width that many people expected, and with no room for any horizonal look-around at 5K 2:1.

I posted similar comments in Jim's Recon thread about image circles; I'm looking forward to seeing the full official details on available resolutions, sensor sizes and look-around options. The term "5K" doesn't really tell the whole story.

No, it's a prototype demosaic that is still being tuned to the new sensors.

I was expecting a mohawk and an unhealthy amount of gold chain.

This is better. Not by much but better.

that does look good!

Focus plane is about half inch/1.7 cm, notice how Mr. T is only sharp from nose tip to about behind the eyes, that's some very shallow focus plane indeed. What aperture were you using and how far from T were you Jarred, if you can remember of course?

Jarred, you are having too much fun.

Mr. T has a hair on his face.

Just sayin' as the image is so detailed.

I think viewing that file in full glory qualifies me for turtle optometry.

I've filmed the real Mr. T in the past several years, and he's great to work with, but I think I prefer this Mr. T for a 5K closeup - no offense Mr . T !!

Seriously, great shot Jarred. AFAIK, this is the first image we are seeing from the new sensor that is not a screen grab, and the first image that really shows us where this is going. I've now pulled my kids out of school to work in a sweatshop to help pay for the Epic X upgrade. With the bit of extra time that Jim says we have, it might be enough to fully cover it!

It really is just mind-numbing what you guys have done.

It seems like only yesterday that Ted told me he was going to leave AJA and build a camera with the founder of Oakley. I remember looking at him for a long moment and then asking "do you have the sensor?" - to which he replied .... "no. but we're gonna build it". I laughed.

I'm still laughing. But now, it's because I remain in awe of all that you guys have done and continue to do - and how much fun you have along the way.

If RED was somehow rendered obsolete tomorrow - you would still have one of the wildest, great stories in the history of cinema ...

See ya in Vegas!

Post of the year! :thumbup1:

It seems that Jarred don't like moving target :)

If you only knew... Mr. T must of been raised on Red Bull and speed balls.. I never knew turtles could move so fast :)

Maybe more than 85mm with close to wide-open aperture?

:sifone:

And man... We would all love seeing some exterior shots. :)
