  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MEET FELIX....

What did you use to grade like this? Its really fun :)

I used RCX to export a quicktime, then did some quick masking and selective color shifting in After Effects.

The nose was modeled in Maya, tracked in PFtrack and composited (very quickly) in AE.

I have a questions about this fixed lens.
Is the t-stop 2.4 or 2.6?
Whats the official range...28-200.
Are there any thoughts to diopters that can increase the range on either end?

Use LaCie Blue Eye instead. My 3D monitor is calibrated with a profile from that LaCie sensor. And I do all my color grading in the dark. ;)

Used to own a couple LaCie probes/monitors as well. Same thing. No two alike. They're all within a given range, but you get what you pay for. Proper color calibration on a colorimeter usually costs just as much or more than most of these cheap probes. The Blue Eyes come bundled with most of their color displays or you buy them separately for $185, IIRC.

It's best to order the probes right from someone who does the calibrations; Cinespace, SpectraCal, etc..

I've got a Klein K-10 figured into my hardware budget this year, also considering the Hubble, but I'm holding off on everything until I get my Epics purchased and until I can get to NAB and check out some of the new projector options. I've been holding my breath for a 4K projector and I'm hoping this is the year... If not, I'll be getting a 2K/1080p as a temporary since I'll definitely need something as I have two big (for me) productions starting this summer and hopefully Epic-X cameras to shoot them on.

4 is to show what a 1080 crop of the 3k Scarlet image could look like. Plenty of room to zoom in! I like this a lot, bye bye steadicam ;-)

If only it were that simple. When there's plenty of room to track and stabilize a shot, it works from the stability point of view. However, it takes a lot of work to correct motion blur and to get it to look right. Anyway, stabilization in post is used all the time and with 3K+ resolution there's usually enough room to work with for most practical purposes. If you start having enough motion where you're moving more than 100 lines of resolution or so between a few frames, the blur is going to kill the shot anyway.

Jarred, thank you so much for posting the r3d.

Seeing the videos from CES and getting to grade some actual Scarlet footage has been fantastic. It has reinvigorated my anticipation for this camera, and I'm thrilled with the prospect of shooting with it.

Thank you, again, RED Team for making this possible for all of us.

Off topic I know, but when I run the 64bit REDCINE-X on either my Mac Pro 1,1 or my MacBook Pro 5,5 both running Snow Leopard, all I get is a red X in the chicken clip. 32bit works fine. What am I not doing/missing?
Thanks

Good point. You could also use it in reverse and create handheld motion from tripod-footage.

You are nuts... In a good way though. :-)
But yes, like this you can change the style of your footage to whatever you like. Make handheld stabilized, and make stabilized handheld.
Have to stop thinking now, I'm going to shortcircuit my mind over the endless fun I am going to have...

This is early Scarlet sensor calibration and Scarlet footage forced through the EPIC color science. It showcases how close they are, but not exact. It also shows the danger we face posting stuff like this before it is completely done. We are close... but still have some tweaks to do. As long as everyone understands it and doesn't try to pick it apart, we'll continue to post images through development. If we get too many pixel peepers, we'll just hold back until everything is done.

Quite frankly, if I were a Scarlet customer I would be pretty happy right now.

Jim

Jim, don't listen to the whiners. I had a grin from ear to ear the entire weekend, just from playing with this little clip. Had way more fun then partying last weekend. :-)
And if this is early calibration I'll be smiling the entire first year of shooting with scarlet. You guys take your time, and for the love of god, build enough of these before release. Well, that won't be possible, but as much as you can then... Thanks for your vision and determination with Red and its whole team; it has changed and will change a lot of bussinesses, even lives.

optical illusion... and thats from sensor plane remember.

This can work in certain situations really well, however don't forget you have to allow for parallax so quite often you are reduced to xy axis, which can look terrible. It works nicely though for slight movements as if someone is hand-held but trying to keep it steady. Also without going too far off topic. It does help if the shot is off at an angle rather than geometrically composed. It will look less mechanical.

Have to agree. I would certainly be pretty happy with it at this point. Directly comparing Felix with the Epic shot of the Tiger in RCX one can see where there is a bit of work yet to be done, but the differences aren't huge. Lots of fun to be able to pixel peep a few frames. It all just keeps getting better.
