  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

That's pretty much describes what I'm trying to achieve, but with a green tint in the shadows, and sodiumish midtones. Was that in LR/PS? Or all in RCX?

I like what you did with yours, what kind of style project are you working on, that you based the look on?

A grungy, kind of Thelma and Louise in Sin City...or something like that. Short film, undergrad senior project.

Primary in RCx then TIFF's out into After Effects. For secondaries did a brief blur map and combination of filters, curves hue/sat etc...

Sounds great. You shooting on RED or hoping the next line will be out in time.

EDIT: I didn't end up using the blur map as the glow and diffusion pretty much did what the blur map would have done anyway.

Ha, I wish. No money for rentals, so using an EX1 my friend/director owns. Principle Photography begins a week from yesterday.

Maybe next project I can shoot on something RED. Until then there's AC gigs...

I think I may be doing something similar in Color - no blur in secondaries, but been experimenting in the Color FX room

I've shot and graded some nice stuff on EX1 its a nice camera. Are you dangering the 35mm Adaptor? I personally wouldn't. I've also shot some nice stuff on a few HV20's mind two years ago in Poland. Its all about how you use it and light it. The flexibilty is there...its no RED of course but only RED is Radical.

It turns out that the free "look inside" excerpt on Amazon is a very interesting overview of the grading process that answered most of my questions and made me hungry for more. So if there are other folks out there with the same questions I have, reading the online excerpt might be useful for you too even if you don't want to buy the book right away.

No to the adapter - don't like kludging up the kit, and I'm happy with the image as-is.

Running a ProRes from the Felix clip makes me envy how well my "clarity" adjustment works on it in Color...the EX footage never blurred this nicely:

Because he's a Hollywood lion. With the economy being the way it is, he doesn't want to screw up his chances for future work. So he's playing nice.

I guess this is not an attitude I'll meet in the Serengeti, then...

(That'd actually been kind of wicked-fun, having a police report stating that "cultural differences" was the reason for a Lion attack...)

The lions in the Serengeti have much bigger egos and will do as they please, including eating cameramen who don't know the rules.
 
Back to the footage, nice work guys! Stuff is looking great, and it's a lot of fun seeing people come up with various grades and get to play around with this footage.

As Jim has mentioned, important to keep it all in perspective when pixel peeping too hard. Still some tweaking to be done. Similar to when first images of M-X came out and the calibration wasn't finished yet. You get to see the potential knowing it will get even better by the time you have one in your hands.

As to the poster who was mentioning softness in the image, you have to take into account a number of factors including OLPF, motion blur, lens, aperture, etc. I have no doubt Scarlet will be capable of "sharp" imagery. Just not the kind of sharp people are used to with oversharpened HD cameras. It takes getting used to.
 
I don't know... after shooting in San Francisco on a RED ONE all day today and then coming home to a martini and a half a bottle of red wine (with dinner), I am feeling like this thread is a little bit of a love in... Life doesn't get much better.

Can't wait for my Scarlet!! :party:
