  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

May Update... The month of Raven

Brent said dealers do not have priority and are just like everyone else. However, if they ordered 10 cameras within the first day of pre-order they obviously have a greater degree of flexibility as they have 10 cameras that they can switch around to accomdate 10 different people. Power in numbers I guess.

Here is the thing, the price difference between SW and Ravens is not much, around $5K.
But that $5K is a lot of money to the low end independent filmmakers, especially those that are coming from a DSLR background.
I'm sure the Raven orders are in the 10s of thousands if not 100s of thousands, whereas the SW should be in the 1000s...
Imagine fulfilling 100s of thousands, as opposed to 1000s? Everything hand made... and hand tested...
Now imagine you on the receiving end, who ordered in September being told that the SWs are being fulfilled first... but if you switch... you will be first in line.
I'm sure those that can't afford that extra $5K stayed with Raven, but are steaming that the SW people are being fullfilled first, because that was announced much later too.

Didn't they used to have Epic-M and Epic-X models to discern between "hand made" and production line? You definitely paid a premium for handmade. I don't think these cameras qualify as hand-made/hand-tested (correct me if I'm wrong).

Regardless, Scarlet-Ws and RAVENs are different cameras. The Scarlet is heavily based off the Weapon design, so they share design features like the lens mount, OLPFs, etc. I know the RAVEN is very similar, but making a design change like an integrated lens mount could result in a lot of additional testing, troubleshooting, revisions, etc. I guess that's what I assumed would be some of the reasons why the Scarlet-W was able to come together a bit faster. Because it is based heavily on the Weapon design they've been making and shipping for a while now.

It's fine that RED offered people to switch to the front of the line, but I don't really buy the whole "they've been waiting since September!" line of reasoning... because I was waiting, too. For a Scarlet replacement. Not for a fixed EF mount RAVEN. So just because I didn't place an order on a camera I didn't want doesn't mean I wasn't "waiting", as well.

If you've been allocated, you'll ship ASAP (post #141 of this thread)

Ahh I don't know about that. I was "allocated" for a Weapon MG that I was paying in to, at a total of $22k then Raven month showed up and I now have to wait a month even tho I am ready to pay in full. Pretty screwed situation

Jarred and Brent just show here to calm down people emotions (PR) but they are not really giving us specific information.

All this situation is really wrong. The end result is not diferent from Blackmagic design: they didn't deliver the camera when they promised. Worst part they took full payment from lot of people.

I honestly don't see many raven orders placed at red.com going out this month. Just think for a second. this guys haven't shipped yet Scarlet-W allocated and fully paid a month ago.

You should talk to Brent about that, he has said numerous times that if you were allocated you should be receiving your camera in this month.

Bullshit.

We started shipping Raven and Scarlet-Ws when we said we would. Last month, the Scarlet-W owners got to jump in front of the Raven guys by switching over to Scarlet-W and at the start of the month I told you we would catch up the switchers from that point by the end of NAB, which we did. And Raven guys got put out a month because of it.

The Scarlet-W guys who are shitting on the Raven guys for pushing them back are being dicks.. The Raven guys didn't bitch and moan when they got pushed back a month for the shit-ton of Scarlet-W cameras that went out last month, and now this month it's their turn to catch up. It sucks to wait but come on lets try and be at least a little fair.

Those that we told to pay for their cameras because it was ready, are in fact being shipped... we are not telling people to pay for cameras and not shipping them and running off to Vegas with everyone's money.

Nobody promised you when you would recieve your camera, we have only said when we would start shipping. We receive and continue to receive more orders than we can manufacture so the "end" date of catching up keeps moving along with doing upgrades it is impossible to predict when you will get your camera. If a customer that has priority over your order, an upgrade etc, then you get moved out. That's why we cant give you your dates.

I am going to start modifying the Que line based on peoples' attitude.

As frustrating as the delay is, the honesty we're getting from the Red team is commendable. It's interesting seeing the constrast here... looks like Black Magic has their shipping on hold at the moment as well, but no one knows for sure, not even their resellers and distributors.

Fire Chief, you are truly becoming Red Leader ! I loved Jim's attitude back in the Red One days.

Btw, cameras are shipping, I'm shooting on RVZ Scarlet-w monday, I saw a few popped up on my facebook's contacts. It's awesome, I can't wait to have my own. When I bought my Red One, the delay was actually a blessing. Every month I sent Red money to fulfill my order. It was a form of credit line opened to anyone.

I don't have enough for accessories right now, a month is what I need to gather the funds. Thanks for that delay, because of it, I won't loose my place in the queue.

I believe it was told to us since the beginning when the started ship date would be and NOT to plan new work and expect the camera to magically arrive right before your shoot. I think loaning cameras is far above what was promised. People are putting their misplaced anger from planning to have their camera before a shoot on RED when it was clearly pointed out not to. It will be nice when these updates turn into people being more grateful for having communication than turning into a whine fest.

This is exactly what people coming from "off the shelf" kind of brands to RED family can't seem to understand. They just think that if you guys said "Date X" for Raven it will appear "In Stock" and everyone will get their camera shipped in 3 days.

Some people don't like to read much and get to the bottom of things, they see a date and assume the rest, well, frustration on them, because things are done differently here and anyone with a grain of intention to figure it out can do it in 10 minutes reading posts here.

It's just growing pains caused by so many ex Canon, Sony, Blackmagic etc. users who are used to buy their cameras at B&H.

Yeah totally, a byproduct of the company being more easily affordable to younger generations who have developed alongside with the internet, which has helped create a incalculable amount of amazing things but one downfall is that people are basically addicted to instant gratification these days. Hopefully everyone will settle down after this month and once they get their hands on a RED. This community is absolutely fantastic, the occasional bad vibes in some of these threads are a bit of a bummer, hopefully it doesn't turn off very many people from participating in discussions.

With all due respect, if you are really going to "modifying the Que line based on peoples' attitude" that would be really unprofessional and I'm sure for some the last drop that spilled the cup. if you can't take Criticism when make a mistake I dont understand why you have this forum, only to hear the sycophants?. I don't know if you are aware of the situation but The company I work for still waiting for their Scarlet-W their paid in full before NAB. reading this pages you can see this is not an isolated case.

Were you informed that you are allocated? You can pay in full if you like way in advance, but only allocation notice guarantees that you will see your camera pretty soon.

Otherwise your money will just chill in your account waiting for, again, allocation. So whether you paid before NAB or not doesn't matter if you weren't allocated. If you were though, that's a whole different story.

They didn't make a mistake, they made a decision. It seems you misunderstood your own situation. And it you don't see the point of this forum, then you clearly haven't been paying attention. Jarred and Brent both stated on multiple occasions that if you paid in full and have been allocated then you are still going to be taken care of. Take the time to read and understand the situation before you bash everyone out of frustration.
