Corrected previous misstatement mixing vertical with horizontal
Over the weekend I repeated the Scarlet 5K test on a Red Epic, and this time it seems like 1700 vertical lines per picture width is the max I can resolve. While I am only using Canon L Series and Rokinon primes - they resolve all the way up to 2000 on Canon Mk 3.
Really just interested in practical % of information captured for OLPF, sensor, capture / compression combinations.
For Dragon maybe it is ~70% - so that at 5.5K you get clean 4K texture? I saw at least one Dragon owner suggest that.
Curious what is equivalent for Mysterium. So 70% would be like 1750 line pairs (horizontal) and so maybe my test was actually dead on.
So once 8K is standard maybe projectors should be 5K
Anyway, not trying to kick up dust - just trying to decide on whether I should upgrade to Red Epic and stick with that technology for a few years or if 6K is 'required' to provide true 4K post. I have seen a lot of studio films shot on Epic and never remember thinking they were soft with 4K projection, but I also don't know how much sharpening / CGI was involved either.
So maybe I will repeat with Dragon for that target (link in first message) or higher frequency target at 6K, 5.5K and 5K on Dragon with low compression, ideally with and without OLPF? Just one vibration free frame for each in .r3d
So if Red were to come out with 5.5K Raven...
Thx,
Mike
