  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matte Boxes; RED's vs. O-Box vs. Redrock Micro

Can I add to Bjorns list the biggest failing of the Red mattebox is no rotating stage. In the 21at century ND and Polas are by far the most common filters. No rotating stage means buying an expensive "rotating pola" filter

Jason, I don't know if you've made a decision, and I didn't read everything in the thread, but did notice, like many queries on reduser, many who reply ignore the consideration of "budget" -- but let me say this, quite by chance (a long story) I came to be the possessor of a Movecam M-1 A (b&h sells them & 16:9 is the west coast dealer) and it is, I believe the best built mattbox for the money out there. I own a full Obox setup, I own a complete Vocas 450 setup (approaching Arri build, nobody gets there but Arri) -- and I did own a full Redrock mattbox setup for the Red 1. And have used the Red mattbox. And of course Arri on a rental basis.

I recently had a gig where I decided to test out the Movcam as I already had sufficient confidence in the quality just messing around with my own stuff. It lived up to my expectation totally in a production environment. And I feel quite confident you won't find a lighter, better built or more versatile setup for the money anywhere. For 1100 you're in, if you want 15/19 they have a very nice bridge and the total package, side-wings, eyebrow, the works, is $1400 with bellows.

I have no connection to them and hadn't even heard of them until I received this kit as a gift for big favor I'd done. Check it out. It fits your budget. It's light and strong and looks sharp. Don't be put off by the made in China or the price. It is definitely real kit. I love the Obox, but in all honesty, the M-1 serves my purpose. And costs a lot less. Of course it doesn't have the set "cache" -- if that's an issue. But from what you said, it isn't.

Avoid the RedRock mattebox like the plague. As with most of their products - it is cheaply built, poorly engineered, and simply will not last. Bright Tangerine is brilliant, and obviously you will get a quality product from either Arri or O'connor. You get what you pay for.

100% agreed

Im fighting to get the Red mattebox to work. As it is now there are a few things missing. I need to have it mounted on 19mm rails. So I got the fixture for that from red. Still waiting for a swing away option, wich is what we really need. But I also need some rubber donuts to go with it. Our hawks travel quite a distance when pulling focus and I do not think the neoprene rings will please our clients so I need "the real deal" kind of donut. Fitted for 110mm fronts and also one for the hawk 35mm that has a 157mm front diameter.

The thing I had in mind is: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/693549-REG/Chrosziel_410_11_Rubber_Bellows_142_5_to.html

But I do not know how well it's clamped on to the redmattebox and what to use with the big 35mm. any suggestions would be much appreciated... buy a arri mattebox or any other brand that would do the job is offcourse a solution but we have enough of those allready and I want to push trough hell and high water to make this red mattbox work.

Guys which adapter do I have to use with the Obox on 15mm rails for the rotating to work?

The Bright Tangerine seems cool. The US rep quoted me almost $4K for it. I'm certain you will demonstrate it's 4 times better than the O'Connor but I can't afford $4K for a mattbox yet, I'm afraid. If there is a cheaper one in their line he didn't mention it.

Hey man , look into the Bright Tangerine line-up!

Everyone who purchased one loves them. Seriously, check the threads here. I love my Strummer which sounds like the system your looking for.

What US rep did you speak with? Theres a few of them. There is the Viv which is the clip on and rod mounted matte box. It is similar to the Obox, but at half of what the Strummer costs. The Strummer is the equivalent of the Arri MB20 (swing away) and the most expensive. Contact Curt, the distributor in Arizona and a Reduser and he can get you a quote. Check out his review of the Viv and see if your interested.

Like Matt said, the VIV is closer to the size/features of the O-Box, and much cheaper than the Strummer. I went for the VIV over the O-Box after a lot of research... I couldn't be happier. Curt was super cool to talk to and didn't pressure me into buying anything. Just a straight-shooting honest dude, and the product sells itself. He got me a quote very quickly, helped me figure out what I needed (which clamp rings were appropriate for my lenses etc) and shipped the mattebox out very quickly.

You'll love the BT. Can't go wrong. It'll hold its value way better than the plastic O-Box too.

Recently got the 3rd stage for my Red MB and noticed fringing right away when on the 18-85 -have to notch it forward a bit to 20-22 to lose that...unfortunate. Mental note -do not throw out the 2 stage adapter that was originally in there in the event I need to go back to using on the wide end at 18mm.

+1, Curt is a wonderful guy, always willing to go extra mile to help, and the product sells itself and like Curt mentioned in the promo vid, the rods don't go pass the rotating filter stages cos of the size of the stages. You probably need Varitube or some set of rods if you use still lens (as some of them are extremely short in length). Just something you need to prep for.

I have been faced with the same choices and will probably drop the Redrock choice based on various reviews as well as the fact that there are many used ones for sale by professionals. I'd rather buy one to keep for a long time, which will probably be the O'box, although I'll also look at the Movcam.

I think I'll just stick with saying "price" although I know it's very trendy (if meaningless) to say "price point."

Not that I'm trying to sway you, but again, that quote must have been for the Strummer. The Viv 2 stage kit can be bought for just under $2,000. So obviously you were misquoted or asked for the studio matte box instead of the obox style Viv. There's a big price difference between the two.

For those of you using the VIV-
I heard that Bright Tangerine was working on an optional swing away attachment for the VIV. Not sure how it would work, so I don't know if there's any truth to it or if someone was just getting confused with the Strummer. Anyone know anything?
Thanks!

-Harry

There will be an optional swing away arm soon. I own both a Viv and a Strummer and was told the optional swing away arm should be coming in a couple months.

Fantastic. Sounds like I'm gonna be a VIV owner sometime in 2013 then. Ready to get rid of the RedRock Mattebox!
Thanks Matt. By the way, do you know how I could get in the loop so to speak on the updates from Bright Tangerine?
Thanks!

You will be absolutely blown away by the quality of the VIV, Harry. Enjoy!
