Hey guys,
Wondering what matte box you would recommend for the dragon that will not get in the way of a 6k image. Currently have the Arri MB-14 but need something that will not crop the image. Seems so simple to have a bigger opening but I am finding I need to upgrade to a newer matte box. Please let me know your thoughts.

Cheers!
Brandon

Shouldn't matter one way or another. Field of view should be field of view regardless of the sensor.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. An 18mm that didn't show his mattebox on MX would have a wider field of view on Dragon and could now get the mattebox in the frame. Or maybe I'm not understanding his situation?

The arri mb-14 is ok up to 3k. Once you hit 4k, the matte box starts coming into the fov. This is because the sensor is getting cropped when shooting at less than 6k.

Thanks!

Sounds to me like the matte box is cutting into the field of view for the lens.
If the matte box is removed, and there is still vignetting, then the lens does not cover the sensor area.

Isn't this just the inherent problem with very wide lenses and matte boxes? Shorten the matte box too much and it ceases to function in one of its major roles; as a sun shade. If your lenses have screw on filter capability, that would be one way to solve the problem.

Yep, Dragon sensor is 3.07mm wider than the MX sensor, so a bit larger angle of view. Actually with an 18mm lens, the AOV on Dragon 6KFF is about 81° vs. it being 75° on the MX sensor at 5KFF.

The MB-14 is a big matte box. It's rather deep and even though it accepts large 6.6" filters, the depth and extra bulk around the filter frame and bellows section actually makes it quite restrictive for wide angle lenses.

I'm really liking the Bright Tangerine matte boxes lately. Also RED's own matte box is pretty decent. The way the flags attach is a bit funky and they have been slow getting a lot of extra pieces to market, but I own one and it's been OK. It's great as a lightweight clip-on solution, being all carbon fiber and it allows for a wider AOV than the Arri MB-15 or similar clip-ons out there.

The Bright Tangerine Viv and Strummer DNA both cover Dragon. Widest field of view on the market for matte boxes...

I have the OConnor O-Box WM works fine as wide as 18mm 6K FF.

I think I used it with a 14mm too or I might have had the mattebox off for that shot. Can't even remember!

Yeah but he didn't specify what lens he was intending to use. If he was using an 8mm on MX vs a 50mm on Dragon the MX would have problems but Dragon wouldn't. You can shoot 6k Dragon with the same matte box as before, just use a slightly longer focal length to get the same FOV. Sensor size is irrelevant.

Is this the new product you mentioned that was still under wraps at NAB?

It wasn't under wraps at NAB. It was on display and they were even selling them on the floor. They are currently available to order.

Ah...my bad. I did a search and it was a FF production you mentioned, not a MB. I'm in the market for both, and eagerly await their announcement.

I recently compared both BT matteboxesm VIV and Strummer with my O'Connor O Box. Wider FoV, more filter tray options and swing away capable. BT gear is expensive, it's quality stuff.

But BT VS O'Connor... If I had to do it again... BT VIV with swing away arm option, no questions. O'Connor support in LA is terrible, part of a larger Viacom type father company and have had the unfortunately experience of finding replacement parts. Very difficult. I'm still waiting on a screw from a request three weeks ago.
