  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matte Box Options

the misfit atom clamps to the front of my lens, i can rotate it 360

So in the rare case you've got it rotated 90º and need to use the eyebrow, you just gaff tape a piece of cardboard to the top?

That was the one other thing about the Atom that gave me pause -- no option for side flags. But I almost never need them, and in the rare occurrence I do, there's always gaff tape and cardboard...

How are you guys with those lovely small and light matte boxen (misfit, misfit atom) dealing with using a pola? Do you get the rotapola? Or stick it in the tray and rotate the whole shebang? Or carry a larger matte box with a rotating tray for when you need to use the pola?

With Wooden Camera you can break down to 1 or 2 small treys that attach to the lens and rotate those. Pretty slick.

you cannot attach a flag to the treys, but it's more gimbal use so needs to be minimal

Check out my review of the Bright Tangerine VIV. https://youtu.be/m-39Jjme5Gg

They are super lightweight (particularly the Misfit ATOM, but the VIV is also very light) and the quality is top notch. The main thing is how wide their field of view is and that the VIV at least can hold up to three filters, plus a circular filter tray.

The usual low-tech method for masking flares on a matte box without flags is to use 2" matte black paper tape across the front of the sunshade. This essentially does the same thing as flags or a hard matte. Unfortunately with the Atom's flexible rubber shade, tape will not stick to it. So you're better off with a French flag, grip solids on stands, or even just removing the rubber shade altogether and replacing it with a custom rigid chloroplast shade attached with Velcro to the filter tray. Chloroplast is the same lightweight material used for Kino Flo Select housings. It is also often used by camera assistants making their own monitor sunshades and hard matte shades for studio matte boxes.

Hello all. I'm just bumping this thread to see if there are any new preferences in Matte Box World.
It's almost two years later and it seems all the fore mentioned products are still viable.
Any additions?

Tilta's matte boxes are very good, and a good value. I have an arri mb-19 for my primary, then a tilta P-size clamp on, and then an ultra light weight clamp on. The tilta is about $500 and is a great value. No rotatible stage, but I use a rota pola in there.

I love the new Arri LMB 4x5

The MB is really flexible- for super lightweight, single filter gimbal work and expandable for multi stage, swing away studio application.. It can do clamp on or 15mm or 19mm rods, and comes with a Bright Tangerine Black Hole which is great with smaller DSLR lenses. It is a bit pricy compared to competition, but you can purchase the base kit for around $2K and expand as needed.

Here is their launch video from last May: https://youtu.be/e8obrkvomfk

Nick have you evaluated the fixed 15mm rod Tilta units or the swingaway?

I love the new Arri LMB 4x5

That is a beautiful system and SO well thought out.
At this moment I'm more considering the WC UMB-1 or BT Misfit modular systems since, as you mentioned, the Arri is a bit rich

I have BT ViV and M.Atom, they are very good and great value for money, considering I bought my BT ViV 5 years ago I believe they are built to last a lifetime....and their cost reflects that. However, I picked up Tilta MB-T05 4X4 Lightweight Matte Box last November and I was really happy with the build quality. Its 15mm rod swingaway with 2 filter trays (1 rotating filter) but I do have to note that the main box (hood) is plastic and only comes with top flag. No side flags or options to mount them. It clears all the lens down to 12mm (when I am on Tokina 11-16mm).

If you are on budget I would strongly recommend Tilta MB-T05, as your 4x4 filters are always cheaper than 4x5.65 counterparts (though a lot would say 4x5.65 is the standard). But, like I said overall its great value (I even picked up a 2nd unit).

Totally agree with Abiodun about the Tilta T-05, fantastic matt box, could always ask your AC to flag the side with some black card board or just a flag on a c-stand when you need it. best value for money. You can see it in action on my Instagram feed on some photos: https://www.instagram.com/p/BUZotsEhE_7/?taken-by=oroncohenfilm

Bite the bullet and go p-size. 4x4 are ok for some things, but not a lot of things. Just saying, you aren't going to regret a p-size box, someday you are gonna regret 4x4.

If going 4x4 and tilta then just get the MB-T03 . Its carbon fibre...swing away, 2 filter stages, comes with top and side flags, and I think it can be turned into a clip on as well (I'm not entirely sure on that)...but I haven't tried it. I've had mine for years and it's still rock solid. Not a bad price either.

The issue for me and the reason why I didn't buy the MB-T03 is that it only for Lenses with Up to 100 mm Diameter, some of the lenses I'm using are 114mm, other then that, great choice.

Another very solidly build Mattebox that really surprised me and basically have everything one should ask for is the Movcam Mattebox MM1, it doesn't expend to 3 filters and can't have 2 rotating filters, but that's about it.
