  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Looking for matte box options for Raven and S-W. I shoot in many different scenarios, tripod, handheld, shoulder, Movi, etc. Looking for something versatile. I've heard good things about the Bright Tangerine, just can't decide which is the best. I mainly shoot on Canon CN-E primes. I open to suggestions.

I also own a bright tangerine Misfit Atom. Its really awesome if you are just worried about attaching filters, it clamps to the fron of the Cannon CN-E without rods which is great and amazingly light weight.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ngerine_b1230_0012_misfit_atom_clamp_kit.html

if i had to do it all over with a low budget i would deff go with the wooden camera universal mattebox, thing is great you can break it down to a clamp on 1 tray gimbal up to a 3 tray full mattebox.. pretty awesome

I was looking at the same thing, meaning Matte box, rig and rail systems.

Unfortunately, with this Raven purchase, my budget has run thin...

In any case, I still look around. Things to consider, since you use CN-E primes... you're looking at a 114mm diameter opening. Don't look at anything less than 4X5.65 inch. And, depending on how often you switch lenses, you may benefit with a swing away instead of clamp on matte box, in which case you will need a rail system.

Which, brings me to my next question, Red offers a matte box (its a clamp on), if anyone knows, can you transform it into a swing away matte box?
 
If you are looking for something to fit on a Movi, you want something lightweight like the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom.

Outside of super lightweight gimbal use I can certainly recommend anything BT makes. I have my O-Box still, but at the moment and for pretty much a year now my favorite matte box has been the Chrosziel Cine.1 MB565, but it's not the lightest weight thing you can get.
 
Great points to consider. From everything I've heard and seen, Bright Tangerine has a good product.

@Matthew Quinn...was there anything in particular you didn't like about the Misfit?

@Phil Holland...was the Chrosziel the one used on the Forged shoot?
 
Hey Matthew. Have you used the Wooden Camera? I am between that and the Misfit Atom. Seems like the WC has more versatility but the light weight of the BT is appealing.

Nothing but Chrosziel for us. We've used LOTS of different matte boxes over the last 10 years or so. The rubber donuts on the Chrosziel matte boxes also also offer the most compact, lightweight solution we've used. Unlike O-box where you have get a big bulky adapter, the Chrosziel donuts screw directly into the mattebox itself. If you use smaller lenses, the older "battleship gray" Chrosziel matte boxes (450-02) are also the best bangs for the buck as they're pretty easy to find used. :-)

I just got the Wooden Camera Universal matte box. Most amazing matte box made. Goes from full production down to one tiny trey for gimbal use. Super versatile. The only matte box that truly covers all the bases. Even in the built-up mode, it's very light.

Used the Misfit Atom when I needed the matte box on that. Mainly to hold an optical clear to protect the lens from stray molten steel and nickel.
 
I've been trying to decide between the Misfit Atom and the Wooden Camera for a bit now. Good to see it seems like I can't go wrong with either. But I'm leaning towards the Bright Tangerine because I love their larger matteboxes.

How are you guys with those lovely small and light matte boxen (misfit, misfit atom) dealing with using a pola? Do you get the rotapola? Or stick it in the tray and rotate the whole shebang? Or carry a larger matte box with a rotating tray for when you need to use the pola?
