  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matte-box choice...

I used to be a big chrosziel fan. but the 450 is a lemon. leaks light like crazy. don't know what they were thinking on that one.
right now by far the best bang for the buck is the O'box. And that thing is bulletproof.

I really like the Oconnor O-Box. Hope someone makes a swing-away solution for it.

I'm all about the OConner O-Box at this point. Been using it for a couple weeks on 3 shoots and it's all business. I tried out a bunch of other matte boxes too. I actually like that it's not a swing away design as it frees up more rod space for follow focus positioning. Built real tough.

I use O-Box with both LWS and O-Grip for studio rods. It is really solid and it has 150mm rear openning so I can use my Cooke 18-100.
Also, I can use it as a clip-on with Leica-R lenses since these lenses will extend when you change focus.
Even without the swing away, it is the best mattebox for my needs.

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but I couldn't find any thread/discussion that answered my question.

I'm looking at getting an Arri MMB-2. Has anyone have any experience using this matte box with wide angle lenses? What is the widest focal length you can use with it?

I have a GL Optics 11-16mm and wondered if it will vignette at the wide end of the zoom.

I've got Shoot35's MB and really like it. Has a clip on as well as swing away options. It's incredibly light as well (with clip on method). 2 stages that rotate 360 degrees.

Chris

I've got the Shoot35 follow focus and it's amazing for the money.

How does the Shoot35 matte box compare with let's say Bright Tangerine ? (Or some other reputable Matte Box)

I need a new matte-box... I would like it to be an ARRI box (rentable) and it needs to have a swing-away function, and it need to fit the lenses i own, and plan to own...

Advices are well appreciated : )

It need to accommodate the Red Pro 18mm on the wide side of things, maybe even the Duclos 11-16mm, if I won't need to compromise (maybe I need a seperate matte-box for the super wide lenses, but I would prefer to be able to use the Red 18mm with my primary matte-box, if I don't have to compromise on size...).

Of coarse, it should also accommodate the longer Red Primes, but I guess this will be no problem...

On the other hand, I already own an 18-85mm lense (it's HUGE), and I guess I'll need 5,65x5,65 filters for polarization, and any other filter that needs to be rotated - to be able to fit the front element of the 18-85mm?

Best regards,
Jon M.

I would go with the smb-2 or mb19

Might I also suggest a Bright Tangerine option? They have the swing away option, and share some design traits as well.

I have an MB-19 on my A camera. I just bought a Tilta MB-t-12 as my b camera MB. I have to say. It's pretty hard to beat at right around $600. It's a clamp on with a lws bracket. 3 stages, need a rota-pola if you don't want to go cock eyed with a polarizer, but it's a pretty well made unit.
