  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Matrox MXO and MXO2 test

Quick Matrox question, when importing RED into final cut apple pro res 4444, what output viewer settings do I tell Final cut 7 to view the timeline via SDI out to my panasonic monitor? I have MXO box hooked up, but when I view the seq it seams to be crashing everything or locking up playback...anyone else with this issue?
Yes. At the end I'm using the MXO with FCP outputting to digital cinema desktop preview or raw. In this way I can feed two apple cinema display and one SDI JVC broadcast monitor. I know it's not ideal but it works for now.

C.H.,

If you are doing a lot of RED stuff then RED Rocket™ is superb beyond anything (besides DVS) because it debayers and decode R3D in realtime, accelerate the playback on the desktop or output to HDSDI (I said "or" because one of the other right now, but it will support simultaneous later). Then after you adjust the baselight and render to QT formats, any video I/O would work as long as it supports the target video format of your choice.

I am going to buckle down and get a RED Rocket! I was not aware that I could use this card as SDI feed out while I am cutting in FCP?

C.H.

RED ROCKET at this point only works when you are doing baselight using ROCKETcine-X and REDCINE-X. Support for 3CP and Scratch is coming soon.

So what I meant is you can use ROCKETcine-X to adjust the baselight and render to QT file with HDSDI monitoring from RED ROCKET, then when you read those in FCP, you can use video I/O like MXO2 series (up to 422 10-bit) or Blackmagic Design's Multibridge Pro and Decklink HD Extreme (up to 444) for HDSDI output.

RED mentioned that the first support will be the Log & Transfer support that means only the conversion in the Log & Transfer is support as a first step.

Matrox MXO2 family and MAX function to support Snow Leopard with version 1.7 software. It will be posted soon.

Matrox MXO2 LE & Redrocket - color correcting

Matrox MXO2 LE & Redrocket - color correcting

Kaku,
I don't know how i never found this thread, but finally some discussions on MXO2 with RED.

Can I ask for your knowledge on a setup that I am interested....I don't see that i was asked in the 17 pages.

I currently have REDROCKET card hooked up to my mac tower. I have not yet connected my MXO2 LE but will this week. I also use two Dell monitors while working within FCS3. These monitors are 2407WFP and the new U2410. If i open files within REDCINE-X version 104 or any for that matter, there is a HUGE difference if i pull the viewer from one screen to the other and NO WAY i can do color correction without a properly calibrated monitor. So that is why i bought the MXO2 LE.

I'd like to do my one lights and basic color of ALL my R3d files and then transcode them to prores 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 So i want to do this within REDCINE-X AND I would like to utilize the MXO2's capabilities of color correction over HDMI.

NOW, i am unclear on how i may accomplish this as it seems i have TWO options---of which one i don't understand.

What I want to accomplish: Basic one lights via redcine-x or rocketcine-x and transcode to proress; Then after this is done, go into final cut pro to complete color correction and edits of each clip for stock archives & future use of each clip for online edits.

First option:
install MXO2 board and go HDMI out to one of my Dell monitors--U2410 allows HDMI input OR i can go to my PHILIPS 42" LCD TV(model #: 42PFL7422D/37) THEN, do color correcting of the monitor and now open REDCINE-X or ROCKETCINE-X and do one lights and transcoding on monitor of my choice.
Question: is this possible as I have described?

Second option and one that I am VERY UNCLEAR ABOUT:
(as i understand, my redrocket card is an acceleration card--but it also has output via DVI and HD-SDI---why would i use those first?---this is what i don't understand. If the redrocket is an acceleration card how do i utilize the DVI & hd-sdi outs? I already have those on my ATI video card as well as on my MXO2 LE box. I was told by tech support at RED that the output from the redrocket ONLY works while in redcine-x or rocketcine-x --- my thought is SO WHAT. Now, if for some reason i will get better viewing quality while using the output from the rocket card--and not sure why i would if i am only doing 1080p or 2k work....I'm not doing four DVI outs to a 4k monitor. BUT if i do see some quality difference, can i then just go out of the redrocket card's HD-SDI out to my MXO2's HD-SDI input, then out of the MXO2 LE via HDMI to my dell U2410 or LCD TV ??
Question: now why would going out redrocket's card via hd-sdi to MXO2 LE box give better quality OR, if i went direct from Rocket card to my LCD---why would that be better quality--now if i go direct from Rocket card, my monitor is in question and not a properly calibrated monitor.

Sorry for the long discussion here. I found that I could not get very good assistance when asking Matrox this since they were not familiar with the Redrocket and then when i asked RED, they were not familiar with the MXO2.

Great thread and thanks!
End goal for me is i merely want to utilize the fast acceleration of the rocket and do color correcting and transcoding to prores.

Hello John,

I actually go back and forth between proxy to Apple Color way and RR to ProRes444 and to Apple Color. To me, I figured out how to bring up the picture I want, so depending on the condition of the clips, wether they are consistent or not then I decide or let the director decide which way to go. So, I have both setup configured to work well. The followings are the typical scenarios that I go through, so you can adopt to your workflow.

1. The shots are inconsistent and you have to have different metadata settings on the clips.

In this case, I would edit proxies on FCP using MXO2LE to monitor (that provides video monitor monitoring and synchronized audio) the send the timeline to the Apple Color, set the Apple Color to monitor from the MXO2LE and your HDMI display. Your LCD display, I hope it has RGB balance in gain and bias so the RGB balance is set in the bright area and dark area separately, that will give you better RGB balance through out the range, then you can use MXO2LE's HDMI calibration to fine tune the tint and the chroma that usually LCD monitors don't provide. You can have MXO2LE outputting from Apple Color to grade. I have dual link connection on my Panasonic Plasma and TVLogic XVM245W and compare with single link connections but ProRes4444 coming out from single link seems to show same gamma and the color balance so I'm safe to say you can work with ProRes4444 with single link monitor (? opinion wanted actually).

The clips that will be edited next to each other but have inconsistent exposure, then you can adjust the ISO in the RED room or, if it is over exposed then I would set the ISO so that the bright area stays within the range, then if the dark area such as faces need to be brighter then I'd jack up the master gamma in the primary, then adjust Knee in the curve to make the dark area favorable. In my opinion, Apple Color provides me more control over clips in different conditions. I like this way because you get to do the grading and you can change the resolution on the fly (pretty much) for different purpose as oppose to you are stuck with resolution you rendered previously.

2. Your shots are well taken, so even one light grading would work and you know the resolution then I would do one light in ROCKETcine-X then convert to ProRes4444. The question is wether you have calibrated monitor on ROCKETcine-X output or not. My monitors all have HDSDI so I have the RR output connected them to adjust the metadata. After converting to ProRes4444 then you can edit monitoring via MXO2LE, send to Apple Color and do further grading.

By the way, John, I remember you posting some problems with rolling shutter in DVinfo. I loved your offroad tour video.

Also, been away from this thread, I want to update some news here.

MXO is now compatible with Snow Leopard and FCS3, but in case you used ATI then you have to stay at 10.6.1 then with nVidia you have to use 10.6.2.

Thanks Kaku,
Very informative. I will soon begin some testing. Looks like i must get a better monitor as well. The HP dreamcolor is one i think i'm going to get.

NOW is it possible i can go OUT from REDROCKET HD-SDI single link to my MXO2 LE's hd-sdi INPUT, then out via HDMI to my monitor or LCD TV? Will the signal carry from redrocket via MXO2 LE---therefore (I hope) allowing me to utilize MXO2's calibration tools to set the monitor??

Thanks again Kaku.
Johnny

John,

RR and MXO2 won't work at the same time. If you have two machines, then yeah, but it won't be that practical.
I'm finding buying the new generation Panasonic Plasma will be better than buying LCD display for your work.

Guys, gotta stay in tune for what Matrox will be announcing tomorrow (actually not much for the RED users but for broadcast people who uses H.246).

Kaku,

does the PCIe card that comes with the MXO2 LE have HDMI out?

Robert,

PCIe card itself connects to MXO2 LE and MXO2 LE does have HDMI and HDSDI, so are other analog video ports.

Ok thanks,

so here is my setup. I have RR on a Mac pro, i also have RR Breakout box, but from what i understand it only outputs 8bit HDMI, so it is still sat in it's box!!
I have just ordered the Matrox2 LE, and will either purchase a dreamcolor or the new DELL U2711. I want to grade footage on the HDMI panel ( dreamcolor or DELL) using the Matrox in color, after doing a basic grade using the RR. I will take Pro Res 444 into color.

Does this sound possible to you? and will the Matrox output 10bit HDMI from the matrox card?

thank you

Actually I just did that two days ago. Mac Book Pro/RR in Magma, Matrox MXO2 and MXO at TVCM shoot (in my case I used TVLogic LVM-243W). It worked out great.

In this photo, MXO is connected.

I'd recommend Dream Color over Dell, but be warned that every LCD panel with LED backlight I used so far shifts towards Magenta. You can use MXO2 LE's HDMI calibration to shift this.

One thing notable to mention is that 15 inch Mac Book Pro does not do Apple Color well since Color needs 1980 x 1200 resolution. It's workable but the the Color display gets down rezed tho show the whole window on smaller resolution.

In the photo above, MXO is used because the DP wanted to see the range of the certain portion from the footage on the waveform display on the LVM-243W. MXO has a function called ROI, to select wanted area to display. This was very handy for the DP with limited RED ONE experience.
