I had heard a story of this happening from a client a few months ago and it sent shivers down my spine. Now it seems to have happened to one of my cameras.
I had a client with a respectable amount of Red experience shoot a pretty standard 320 ISO, 24 FPS, 180 degree, 4k shoot. He used False Color and metering to set exposure. The data tech looked at the proxies in passing while he was transferring footage on set. They looked "OK". Almost 2 weeks after the shoot, the footage is now being opened up at the edit house for the first time, in RedAlert and the footage is 4-5 stops under exposed! I haven't seen the footage yet, nor have I spent any real time in the post-workflow side of the Red. I'm just looking for ideas, and to see if anyone out there has any ideas on how this could happen. My first though of course, is that something is messed up with RedAlert, but so far the story is that everything is set up correctly.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

my first thought is, make sure there is not a previous grade in RA.
have them click default for the default setting then if its still off. you have plenty of Raw data to bring it up on.

4 to 5 stops? That sounds really strange to me. That would be the equivalent of shooting at 5,120 to 10,240 iso, which firstly is not possible to set on the camera and secondly anybody would notice because of the excessive noise. Maybe they meant 0.4 to 0.5 stops?

There have been several reports of metadata going funny in Red Alert. The most common is the color is set to 0 and they think they somehow shot in B&W.

Anyway, make sure you default all values before thinking something is wrong.

Hi, I was on this shoot and am equally puzzled. Please read post below

link to pictures from shoot.

So, here we go. We shot the footage on a stage with tungsten light 320 asa 180 deg. There is an 720P prores live capture of the video assist feed clip in the link above. It was captured using an AJA IOhd and FCP. All the monitors on set were balanced for brightness. As you will soon see the Video Assist feed looks nothing like the files we transfered. (Well try downloading them first and look at them on your desktop not the web or just look at that histogram picture.).

I reloaded some of the footage from the shoot back on a Red Digital Mag and played that back from the camera to 17in HD monitor(same kind used on set day of shoot)hoping it would look like the video assist feed(all monitor adjustments were set up as the same day of the shoot), It looked way,WAY underexposed! How can that be? False color reading shows it to be 3-5 stops under. There were like 2 shades of blue!Look at the histogram in the link above. Wow.

There is no way we exposed these shots like this. I know on the day of the shoot if they saw this false color reading, they would have change something to get a correct exposure. We have all been on many shoots with the Red and we all love the false color. But something went wrong here. Please let me know what is going on with this footage.
