  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major Update...

I think it's an excellent plan to try to get the hardware ready first and into people's hands. Software can always be updated and tweaked later - and if it is as easy as I think it will be to upload a new firmware to the cam - this is an absolute a non-issue.

Non of the "bad news" worries me. These are just things caused by their extremely tight schedule - which they keep amazingly well.

It's all good...

I never cease to be amazed at what Jim and the entire RED team have achieved. The accomplishments are so numerous and on so many levels that I really believe they are going to have a whole lot more than "just another competitive product" on the market when they launch. Everything from the quality of the camera to the philosophy of the company is a radical change from the status quo of this tired industry and I am proud to be in that first batch of 100 supporters.

I really can't wait 'till NAB... see you all there. :)

I will personally contact all of the reservation holders from 1-100 to see if they want their camera or want to wait until all features are enabled. They will not lose their place in line if they choose to wait.

Jim

Man, I wonder who the unlucky #101 reservation holder is. Anyways, extremely exiting news and the "bad" news is definitely a non-issue.

All fantastic news Jim.

Any chance the nikon mount will be ready at the time of shipping? As for me that's what will determine if it's usable or not (cheap mo fo I am).

We still believe that we can fill all reservations safely by September or October.
Jim

Yeah!! Thats around 250-300 cameras a month, from May on. Meaning I can start casting for July.

(Yep, I´m an overly optimistic kind of person)

Jochen

The good news is all great – can't wait to hear new lens announcements.

The bad news contains no major issues.

Brook nailed it with the most significant 'bad news' issue. How long will it be before 720p120 and 1080p60 REDCODE RGB are available? Those frame rates are the only reasons for not going RAW as far as I can see. But hey, the Genesis could only do 30fps when it first came out. Mel Gibson and Bryan Singer had to wait for upgrades, so I guess we all can too!

now can somebody sleep well ... and somebody not

Everyone realised this was a monumental task right from the start, to be quite honest I think even the most ardent fans are shocked by just how much has been achieved already. The bad news is not actually so bad, to me it demonstates a commitment to do the job right despite the huge pressure to deliver 100% at NAB. Limited delivery seems like a good compromise to me.

The most important thing is to iron out all the wrinkles before ramping up production and even if that means additional delays beyond what has already been stated then so be it. There can't be many here who would prefer a rushed camera.

Jim -

Offhollywood will take #6 & #7 at ANY stage of development - as we love to tinker - it is really amazing what you guys have done SO FAST - somedays it's hard for me to wrap my head around it - it is inspiring -

Guys I had histeric laugh reading all this thread. English is not my mother tongue, but I am not sure I could find words even in french.

RED team: I am chocked, these news are so GREAT, I could almost cry....sorry this is very pathetic, but that's the state of mind I am in right now.
THANKS so much, for all you have done, and even more the way you have done it!! I LOVE RED SPIRIT!!!!!!!

See you at NAB!
antoine.

Does it mean we have to have high speed port to get it out from the cameara?

The high-speed port is RAW only, so is not relevant for RGB. RGB is only for scaled REDCODE recording (on on-board RED DRIVE or RED FLASH) or dual link HD-SDI output for 'conventional' external recording.

Great news, Jim and Red Team!
Looking forward to delivery, whether it means incremental updates as we all learn the system and iron out issues.
Cheers,
Harry

I'm Chocked too, laboprod. *Sniff*

I also like the firmware upgrade thing. And this announcement really is an indicator of how Red Digital Cinema views itself and it's reservation holders.

I think it also exhibits a great deal of understanding of its first 100 without taking them for granted--it knows we early adopters are part of the revolution, yet will not make us cannon fodder. Vive la RED.

Thanks Jim.
If I could get mine by next christmas, it would be heaven, so take your time.
How I'd love to be at NAB:nerd:

Wow. Just read this. Firmware upgrades make all the "bad news" not really matter much. And the good news in that post completely obliterates any bad news mentioned! I really really wish I could be there at NAB this year. Will there be any presentations with the working camera in New York City anytime soon?

Good luck with everything!

correct me if I am wrong REDCODE RAW will click only 30p at 4K
RAW at 4K will go 60p but it requires high speed port.

well good enough for first 100 units......:-)
