  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major improvement... free as usual.

Will this be a camera build update, software update maybe both?

Was Graeme and or Deanan behind this?
Very encouraging RED team.

And very appreciated by everyone, looking forward to the new improvement on the ridiculously powerful MX sensor.

It is likely to be a camera firmware update and a color science software update at the same time. Good thing is that metadata will keep track of all this.

Wow!! This is crazy cool! Since it's a major improvement, would you quantify what you feel the DR change is? Are we talking a whole stop?

Second, do we have an ETA? I'd love to get it! #27mx stands at the ready :-)

What about putting the MX sensor back to its intended speed of 5ms. I think right now with the current builds its still at the same speed as the original M sensor, which is around 8-9ms.
Ditto! Will this be part of it?

Fantastic. Can't wait to see what you've got for us!

We discovered how to get more out of the M-X sensor while developing EPIC. We also discovered those improvements could be passed down to the RED ONE. Instead of saving it just for the new cameras like most companies would, we decided to share the improvements with our RED ONE owners.

Y'see. This is why Red are a bunch of scammers. See how he just goes and hypes it up, saying he's giving his customers what no other company does.

And all just because he gives his customers what no other company does. For free.

How are all the established players meant to cope with this kind of insubordination? By actually giving their customers value for money?! Hah! That'll be the day.

Jim,
I´m already in love with MX. What a great sensor! Didn´t think R1 would be able get much more improvements after the sensor upgrade...Wow! Speechless.
Thank you!
and again,
thank you to the Red team!

Dear Mr. Jannard,

we would like to share with you our little tragedy with our RED One camera (serial #3101)...

But first of all we want to say that we really love the RED camera in principle (and can't wait for the Epic!), and are very happy with the digital revolution that is going on.

We are three film maker friends from Finland and we become co-owners of our own RED One camera after a long wait in fall 2008.
The honey-moon with our red was fine, but then it was time to go to real production with it... And that's when our problems started...

We shot with the RED on location in Italy in July, August and September 2009.

Unfortunately, quite soon it became apparent that we needed to rent another RED and could not use our own because our RED camera just wasn't reliable enough... It randomly turned off by itself; we took it to the "doctor" at the RED London service in September 2009, and they thought they fixed the problem, but not for long. The camera started shutting off again and again, we had to resort to renting another RED camera again.

This spring we continued shooting our feature in India and in the UK.
On both occasions the RED was serviced and checked in London, but continued its evil ways, and we had to rent another camera locally, often losing time and money in the process.

Now the camera has been three times at the London Pinewood RED service, and still the poor body is not working properly. Just this morning we lost an already agreed rental gig because it shut off again when the client was testing it.

After summer 2009 it has been practically useless - so unreliable that you cannot do any professional work with it.

We seems to be unlucky with our RED one, I know that many or let´s say most of the bodies are working really fine.

So, dearest Mr Jannard, we ask you, what is your suggestion in our situation?

Thank you for you time,
eagerly awaiting your reply,

This is just one reason why I'm a RED customer.

Over the years I worked my way up the video camera food chain and went through the Sony VX1000 and VX2000, then PD-150, Canon XL1, XL1s, XL2, and Panasonic DVX100, DVX100a, DVX100b.

It was a financial crazy train that never stopped.

That's all in the past as the RED One gets better and better, at N/C. Gotta love that.

Geez, Ville, just send it back to RED in California. It's obvious you have a serious issue there. We have never had a camera suddenly turn itself off for no reason. (Luckily, cameras have no artistic taste, or they'd be turning themselves off all the time. "No! I won't do it!")

As for the new build, do we have an ETA? We start shooting our next feature in about a month and would love to use the latest build on it.

Thanks!

Stephen

Hey Ville.. this is the first I have heard about your problems, let me check into it, don't worry we will take care of you.

Geez, Ville, just send it back to RED in California.

Do you know how hard it is to send the camera back to the US from Europe? And if there's a service center in London, which is supposed to be able to do everything service-wise what RED can do in it's HQs, what's the use if it can't fix those "serious" issues? Geez.

As a matter of fact, I DO know how hard it is to do such cross-border shipments.

On the other hand, I would not assume that the folks in London were as adept at handling all issues as the RED team in California, either. Is it unfortunate? Sure is. Glad it's never happened to me. Will RED address the issue? I have no doubts they'll make it right. . . even almost two years after delivery.

I experienced pristine, truly outstanding customer service with Red. Posts like this make me even more confident to stay on the Red train.

Stephen:

I would go easy on ville - he has obviously taken the appropriate first, second, and third steps by sending it to the london EU repair station. Shipping back to the US could create substantial costs and problems so, as frustrating as it may be to have some problems aired on a public forum, it isn't completely unreasonable to try to get the owner's attention while he is online.

As an analogy, if it were a car, under florida's lemon law he would be entitled to a refund or replacement under these criteria - which seem similar to ville's situation:

*Does your vehicle have a defect or condition that substantially impairs the use, value or safety of the vehicle?

*Have you taken the vehicle to the dealership or an authorized service agent at least 3 times for the SAME substantial defect or condition or has the vehicle been out of service for at least 15 cumulative calendar days due to one or more substantial defect or conditions?

PS Missed Jarred's post - but I should have added that I am very confident that RED will take care of him. Feel free to delete this if it seems appropriate.
