  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Major improvement... free as usual.

Still no answer on "when"??? Within a few days? A week or two? A month?

Thanks.

Stephen

We can't control what third parties do with their release schedules. Holding back firmware while we wait for third parties to release is impractical and also prevents proper firmware feedback from the field.

While I agree with this, I would imagine there is reasonable minimum time period that should be extended to the third parties to give them a chance to be up to speed upon release. (Is this indeed the case?)

As I am reading through all this and having a nice intellectual conversation with myself about how great it is to have these continual upgrades, BUT how it can be extremely problematic for those whose lives get "disrupted" by them, I can't help but wonder what people would have RED do to solve their problem. I know if it were me, I'd want some answers and solutions, but what could be expected?

I really can't see much of a way that RED can offer these improvements without there being some disruption. As was said quite clearly and truthfully, RED can hardly control the actions, schedules and priorities of third parties. If they make the SDK available and signal their intentions well in advance, they can only hope (and prod) for everyone to have the same attention to their mutual customers. If not, what? Do they change their policy and only implement changes in new cameras? They can't mandate dates and schedules for rental houses, software developers, camera owners, and the myriad of supporting companies in the industry ecosystem. If I were Jim, I guess I'd be asking "What would you have us do to meet your needs AND meet the needs of others with other, equally annoying problems WHILE still keeping us on the leading edge where we want/need to be?"

Just a thought. As a future Scarlet owner (and one who has the luxury of looking at these issues in a comfortably distant manner, at least for now) I am pretty excited about the way RED keeps improving even things previously shot!!

Getting things out helps third parties gauge how quickly they need to update based on the feedback from customers. Releasing an SDK before there is customer need means that nothing will happen otherwise. That's just a the reality of how these things play out.

There's no disruption, if people test their workflows prior to shooting.

If you're responsible for a workflow and recomend the latest build, you better know that it works until post...

...OR take a calculated and informed gamble on that it works when you go online.

NOT informing the whole chain, is not a good way to go.

In the meantime, geeks - like myself - can test it and find out how it works with the tools at hand... -:)

I asked ETA and for a quantitative amount of DR change back on page 3. I dont think questions are being answered. As usual this thread has turned into either bitching or praising without any Q/A, there goes the usual S/N. Perhaps these threads should just be locked immediately after the first post.

Yeah and I asked when the sensor speed was going to get ramped back up to 5ms. That was suppose to be one of the added benefits of having the MX over the M sensor.

Completely agree with this. After all, won't the new build likely be released as a beta? If a production is going to take risks by shooting with the beta release, they should understand if the post house isn't up-to-speed.

That's one of the most anticipated features for me too and one of the reasons i upgraded to the MX sensor.

Hey Shawn, I bet someone from RED has read the posts asking for specific answers. Just restricting the thread to questions may not mean they will get answered.

As far as the rest goes, they say many divorces are caused by lack of communication. Sometimes its good to bitch and praise. Probably keeps a lot of customers on board? Just sayin....

It makes sense that this improvement is exclusive to the newer M-X sensor.

Is that true? :confused5:

The upgrade will mean less noise and better colors as the image is pushed to very high ISO. The amount hasn't been quantified yet so I can't answer the "how much" question. We think the noise level and color science that is current is pretty darn good. This just makes everything better.

Yes. This improvement is primarily for the RED ONE M-X and EPIC. We found this through EPIC development and since the RED ONE M-X is the same sensor... we are making it available to our customers with M-X.

Also... it is funny that answers are demanded immediately. It took quite awhile to answer the vignetting question for the 2 RPZs. We aren't afraid to answer, but it is probably better that we answer when we actually have some info to give. You may have noticed that I remembered the RPZ question from months ago. No one had to remind me.

As for read-reset, it already was sped up a bit to about 7.8ms... just not all the way (we snuck that one in on you). It is quite complicated to get this done as many things are inter-connected. The team is working on it so when it is introduced, we won't have other features affected. Don't ask which might be affected because I'm not going to answer that. :-)

All I can say is wow!!!, I am at a loss of words. The M-x footage we have been getting has been pretty amazing. I can't imagine how much better it can get.

Thanks, Jim.

Well it sounds like you guys are working on the MX sensor read/reset speed and that's all I needed to hear. Thanks.

Jim it's Sunday even you know who took a break on Sunday, thanks for giving a s*** and wanting to make things even better.
Go home and spend some time with the loved ones.
This is why RED will be remembered long after all the others are gone.
