I'm on a much needed, long overdue vacation in Israel and all I think about is this announcement...

Hmm. I can't quite consolidate the information on all of this. All of the "quotes" below is me paraphrasing roughly out of memory.
Jim: "Tell all family and friends", "If they miss it, they will be pissed", "Keep credit cards ready", "Revolutionary product that effects lifestyle of ordinary people", "You can buy more than one".
I don't care much for hyperbolic statements. I think they are EXTREMELY damaging to a person's or company's credibility. And you can't say "duh, OBVIOUSLY we put some spin on it to give it traction!" after the fact. The damage will be done. Hopefully Jim knows this, and going forward I'll take his statements at face value.
The feeling I get is that this should be a product for "the masses" and this is where I run into problem number one. What product could RED possibly make (orders via red.com confirmed) that my wife wants to buy? The Apple Watch is a good example. Now, my wife has one of those despite not being a 'techie". It's a product that can be made into being almost whatever you want, depending on what apps you use. I think it's a great product, and if you look at the business aspect of that singular product, most companies would be happy if that was all they made and sold. And YET, it can IN NO WAY be described as a revolutionary product on a global scale, since even if I see them here and there they are not THAT common yet.
That said, for Jim's communication to ring true at the end, Apple Watch level "invention" is the entry level in terms of 'scope'.
No product launch of RED so far makes me feel confident that they could manufacture and deliver a hardware product of that level of complexity to so many people. Now, a product doesn't necessarily need to be complex to be amazing. But what thing—related to RED—that isn't technically too advanced could appeal to so many people? Especially those with no prior interest in RED's current products (like "family and friends")?
Most people don't want a camera today—they'll just use their mobile phones. If someone thinks the masses are looking for a product to produce images at a higher fidelity… hehe… I'll just keep on smiling until you tell me to stop… Nothing relating to cameras or lenses, even if it's designed for mobile phones, applies to Jim's description of this launch.
*and yet comments here talk about 8k projectors!??!?? WTF??!*
In terms of storage/backup there could be something there as almost no one does it right and it concerns everyone in this day and age. But it's not very sexy and you don't really notice a proper backup solution in your daily life until that single moment when the sky falls down and you suddenly need it. Great, but not life changing. There are already good and cheap solutions but most people don't even use those so…
Nah, it doesn't add up for me. I think it's actually quite possible for Jim to launch a COOL NEW product. I'll definitely give him that. I just think the target audience is much smaller than what I'm lead to believe. We'll see soon enough.
Oh, and sincerely, GOOD LUCK!
Sorry couldn't resist... The Third Man 1949 "Cuckoo clock speech"... (Yes I know the Swiss do other things too lol).
It has to be an impulsive buy, too. Not sure everyone would jump into projected-to-retina-AR without some previous testing.
100% it will be a compact still/video camera ....
