I'll jump in on the "guess what it's gonna be" game...
It is really hard to pinpoint to exactly what Jim is hinting at, but from what I've understood, it could be (and yes, people have probably mentioned it before) a cameraphone.
I remember him stating that it's something for everyone, and it is not going to replace our RED. People take pictures on their phone all the time. And a phone would never replace a production camera on a shoot.
Most cameraphones have fixed lenses, and this is where the "Every once in awhile everything changes." part comes in.
Liquid lenses.
Look it up, I won't bother to even try to explain since all I know about liquid lenses are based on 15 minutes on YouTube.
Some patents I found online with Jim's name on it suggest that he's been into variable power optical systems and liquid optics in a zoom lens system and imaging apparatuses.
I've also seen a post where he explains why he hasn't revealed what it is yet. Something about not letting the competition getting a head start.
Which would make perfect sense as both Samsung and Apple would definitely implement a tiny variable zoom lens with all the sharpness and autofocus speeds you'd want.
Well... That's my guess. I like the idea of it. And Jim has been into optics for a good while now, so he's definitely the right guy for the job!
Can't do anything other than wait
