  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Magic Motion"...

This is definitely something film can't do. I think you are doing the gold standard justice.

So the more bias towards more normal motion blur, the less DR you get and vice versa? Or am I missing something? :}

Correct. We think we have found the "sweet spot"... but then again, Graeme is not done. In fact, he has only just started. :-)

Where does the mixing come in the processing chain? I expect it's ahead of grading, but is that correct?

I think it's pretty neat that you can control the look of your motion blur from take to take if you would like (without altering the shutter angle). Especially in post.

I'm ready to mess around with it. Curious as to see how you can use this as a storytelling device. :}

There are so many options... but that is what separates a professional from a consumer. You just have to learn stuff and then know which option fits the situation.

very true. this is going to be great when you have a shot that ramps into slo mo from normal ... ie keeping closer to 180° shutter

Looks awesome. Is it possible to maybe get a thread that cant be posted in by everyone that contains all the different examples of the hdrx stuff. Footage and images etc? I like reading through the forums but sometimes its a bit annoying going through 40+ pages to see if any more images were posted.

Is it fair to assume that if one drops the second "track" (resulting in "normal" motion) one also loses the additional DR?

I'm working on something right now, actually...

Correct... except you still have The Foundry option. :-)

I think having more options in post really allows more opportunity for exploration with storytelling devices. You can't physically change the way in which a frame of celluloid is inherently captured after the fact.

Having RAW is one major breakthrough...altering the way the image is actually "captured" so to say is something altogether different. It is easy to shoot a scene and then slap something (i.e. CG, color grade, etc.) on top of it. It is a completely new thing to be able to effect how the image is actually portrayed through that RAW data and HDRx. Being able to change your motion blur non-destructively is truly an original innovation in filmmaking.

I really like this direction, Jim. :}

Very exciting. Thanks for the replies, Jim. And thanks to all of those who toil behind the scenes.
