  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Magic Motion"...

Hopefully the 2nd Annual RED Day in February at RED Hollywood Studios... :thumbup1:

I meant to ask about the new "Crossing the Line", about a showcase that will hopefully be posted just before camera release. But I suppose we'll hear about that soon enough, once HDRx and all other important elements are in production-ready form. Can't be much longer now.

Well ... I'd argue you only want to shoot HDRx™ when you need to - and the camera should be able to tell you that obviously - but maybe you just also shoot HDRx™ for Magic Motion on high contrast pans, etc. - time and testing will tell.

I guess that's the fear of my initial post. If you do shoot magic motion just for certain shots, wont it stick out like a sore thumb? As you say, the other option of leaving magic motion on, and therefor HDR on for your whole shoot seems impractical. As you say, no-one knows until we see more.

Well ... we won't know until it's done and they ship some cameras. But ... just the fact that you can access both streams (if you want) in post - as far as I am concerned - that's a ton of control. I am pretty damn sure, if you use it right, you can mix plenty of "Magic Motion" and "Normal Motion" without anything "sticking out like a sore thumb".

I also love how "double the data rate" of REDCODE is now "impractical" - boy do things change!!!

The only other camera left to talk about is the Scarlet S35. It too has less than capable boards and ASICS for HDRx™™ and Easy HDR. We are looking at that now.
I suppose the $1,000.00 add-on applies to every Scarlet model or shouldn't it supposed?

E. :)

The others... FF35, 645 and 617 all have the proper boards and ASICS.

Jim

It would be nice to "upgrade" boards and ASICS of Scarlet S35 for the full running of HDRx and Easy HDR.

Why?

This would be probably staring point and basic future RED made camera for every professional.

3K S35 sized sensor, max speed 60 fps, HDRx, Easy HDR, Magic Motion, REDMOTE, titanium PL mount, Canon/Nikon/Leica-M/Leica-S2/B4/C,... mounts available, etc ,...

I would pay $5.000 even more to get all that in a full featured Scarlet S35 package!!!!

If somebody want to have 5K @ 120 fps and many other attractive features then GO EPIC.

If $1000 is enough for Scarlet 2/3 why would not be for S35 too?

Because the 2/3" has to process "only" 3K, as compared to the 5K of the S35... This is almost triple the pixel resolution, if not more...

The answer to Your question is the same why most movies do 2K DI instead of 4K...

 Peter

I stand corrected... if Red is losing 50% of the Scarlet 2/3 market only because there are people refusing to pay more $1000 for Scarlet 2/3, how many more will be out of the S35 deal if Red will decide to even charge more than $1000?

Less. Because the people buying S35 Scarlets already understood that it was going to cost them upwards of $20k for all the gear that goes along with it. So a $3k upgrade price is mostly just a shrug.

s35 customers probably are mostly less cash strapped than the 2/3" market which has a large number of people who can't even make the business case for a 2/3" scarlet.

Keep going up the product line and then you get to the $10k body FF35 and you are into the customers like me who are almost demanding that it gets HDRx™™ or else we'll have to consider moving to epic or a scarlet that does have it. I would suspect most s35 scarlet customers would be more likely to not buy a scarlet if they *didn't* increase the price/ASICs.

It would be like the Alexa raising its price by $10k. If you're already able to round up $50k, you probably are more concerned with quality and features than you are price.

I think all of you that are trying to inflate Scarlet prices for avoiding others to buy the same gear as you, you just fear your competitors and don't care about the success of this project.

RED may be losing a few people over the $1000 price difference, but I'm sure they are gaining far more. 2/3" with up to 18 stops of DR, in a complete kit for around the same price as a bare AF100? Hell yeah! Jim just sold me another camera or two. How could people not appreciate what has been added here? When Scarlet releases, it is going to be the number one ENG/EFP camera overnight. Nothing else is going to compare. We'll see what the verdict is for adding HDRx to the S35, but that is a more expensive system to begin with and should be attracting a more production-savvy crowd already familiar with the RED One and necessary accessories / hardware. An HDRx upgrade for the S35 should be a much smaller percentage of the total ownership cost, at least compared to the 2/3" models.

I suspect it won't be the no 1 ENG camera, news needs a fast turn around raw workflow is not required or wanted, also original media needs to be cheap as its given / sent away. YMMV

And now the RED company has come full circle. Hahahahaha.

Yeah, that's what they all said about tapeless workflows a few years ago.

Ojojo, Jeff you have to wait for your two extra Scarlets until I get mine :aureola:

I love the way people make up numbers that don't exist. It's magic.:willy_nilly:

Jim,

I'm curious if Magic Motion done via Post is going to require Nuke, or will this be available in the SDK, and the SDK available when the camera ships?

SDK.
