  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Magic Motion"...

Great to hear that it's being tested thoroughly, and that after rigorous testing you are extremely pleased with the feature. I am definitely looking forward to it.

so how does magic motion work with the 1080p FF rgb redcode?

is the two stream thing something that is combined in camera or in redcine-x ?

Has magic motion be tested for Stereo?

Jim, it blew me away on the first viewing. It's simply gorgeous and I can't wait to see some dialogue footage shot with it. Just 24fps of a person or people being a person or people. Movie-style.

Is there any magic left in our R1-MX's?

Could we be kept sated with this and the SSD modules while we wait on QC for Epic?

Now comes HDRx™. Remember this post and date. HDRx™ is just as important, if not more, than REDCODE. We have tested it in the most demanding situations. It qualifies as one of the single most important breakthroughs of RED.

Jim

After I saw it with my own eyes - I posted this:

"I have not seen anything RED-related as significant IMO since I first saw an alpha version of REDCODE working in the booth at IBC 2006."

they are both breakthroughs in the same way.. I don't think that HDRx have more importance than REDCODE.. they both allows you to capture higher dynamic range footage than linear recording.. REDCODE is the thing without it we won't ever see these kinds of cameras.. HDRx is more improved technology depending on REDCODE that allows you to capture more DR, HDRx can't be there if REDCODE isn't..
HDRx has more different implemtation of reading sensor data (we still don't know how) and processing this data through REDCODE..

Don't worry, Jim, we're trying as hard as you are to maintain our enthusiasm.

As far as HDR I think the Vegas footage qualifies as demanding. The fast pan with all the bright flashing lights would be a nightmare for any previous HDR motion method.

Not really. It's relatively easy to be distracted by the quantity of and diminutive size of the lights in the vegas scene.

Demanding would be something like a close up of a fire dancer or someone running in front of a blown out window.

Whip pans across the sky would be another pretty demanding scenario, or an explosion. Something where the overbrights dominate a good portion of the scene, there is lots of eratic unpredictable motion in the overbrights and parallax.

As soon as I saw a trademark, I was pretty sure you guys were pumped about it. What is the trademark for? Only RED has this brand of HDR?

David

I think HDR will be amazing, even more so for cheapos like me who cant afford an 18K to fill against the sky. So Im excited. It's a feature I think I wont be able to live without once I've used it. I am really happy that it's working and looks great even in these early stages.

Magic Motion - not so convinced yet, if only for the reason that you'd have to shoot your entire feature in HDR mode. If it looks that different then you wont get away with splicing from normal/magic/normal motion. Shooting the whole feature with magic motion brings a few drawbacks like limited overcranking. Does EasyHDR take longer to process in Redcine?

If there was a way to turn it on for normal shooting then I agree it could be significant; but I think most people would opt for MNMB if they want their HDR shots to edit together with other Epic footage seamlessly.

Well ... I'd argue you only want to shoot HDRx when you need to - and the camera should be able to tell you that obviously - but maybe you just also shoot HDRx for Magic Motion on high contrast pans, etc. - time and testing will tell.

Curious (and maybe this is a dumb question): but can you see the "magic motion" in effect live through the LCD/HD-SDI output or only after processing the footage in RedCine?

We are just beginning to test HDRx™ under a variety of conditions... so far we are wildly happy with the results. But there are still lots of situations to go. The fact that the two streams are "conjoined" is a huge deal. If they weren't, an HDR mode could only be used with slowest motion scenes. We like the images we are getting with high motion or pans better than in normal mode. It is still early. Testing continues. The cautious side of me thinks we may run into an exception somewhere (haven't seen it yet)... good news is that if that does happen, you can ignore the "x" frame stream and have normal mode even after you have shot.
