Made in California...

RED is the only company in the U.S. that really doesn't need another 3,000 orders or customers right now, (bugging you on Reduser).
Give it a month or two and then dribble out some press releases and photos, or the video tour thing, or put the video on the site.

I'll say it even if they won't. Thanks for the U.S. jobs. It is a big deal, and we do appreciate it.
It can't be easy or cheap, considering the obscene California corporate tax rates and employee benefit burdens.

P.S. Seems to me that "mainstream" media people are followers, not leaders. They need led.

Conspiracies are easy to deal with compared to the everyday apathy of "business as usual". There is no "conspiracy", and that is the sad part of all this.

It seems like the only way to get press these days and the next coming months is if you moved your operations to a swing state like Ohio in a former steel mill or mining town and hire union folks with the hard hats or welding tools, tank tops, and bandannas and talk about hard working folks and American ingenuity. That or if you somehow were able to put solar panels on an Epic brain.

Ok not to rain on anybody's parade but RED and every other other company out there need to make sales and profits to stay in business.
Especially in the current economic climate.
If you read between the lines, Jim mentioning the lack of support from the media should
set a few alarm bells ringing.
The reality is Red has a great future ahead of it, ONLY if it can think and operate outside the box.
Look at Jim's World tour or Red India,
These are being done for a reason ! To boost sales !

I have already posted a few suggestions that could help Red integrate with current workflows.
This is essential If Red is to survive and grow into the future.

For what it's worth unless Red can integrate and become adopted en-mass by the industry it will always be playing catch-up.
The above device and proxy module would mean Red would become an integral part of current and future workflows.
Red needs a device like this to bridge the gap and cement their position, just as much as groundbreaking devices like the
Red Ray and Red Projector.

.

Grand idea. Data throughput is always the challenge.
Workflows are changing everyday. Largely because of RED files, next year we will see a number of Liquid-Cooled 3 and 4 gig graphics cards, the next-gen Intel CPUs, more custom-built Turn-Key RED workstations and stuff. It is coming.

But the only thing RED is "playing catch-up to" is the order book. That was my original point. They don't need more orders TODAY.
The PR thing can wait until they catch up to the runaway demand. That is actually a good place to be.

"guided self-discovery" is needed...maybe if the tips from some of the earlier posters get to the appropriate assignment editors the word will get around....;

Jim, you said you enjoy a good fight, this is a part of that fight. Take the gloves off and get in their faces. This isn't the time for modesty or coyness.
It would be understandable if there was a genuine lack of interest due to the quality of your product or the nature of your achievements, but that is not the case.
The apathy stems from something much deeper and fundamentally flawed. I won't rant about the political nature of this, but seek them out and ....

As a reduser and great admirer of what you are doing for filmmaking and the community in general, I'll continue to send out queries and requests to those who should be paying attention.

Get over yourself... concentrate on meeting deadlines and building reliable products, then you can worry about american pride.

I've been on this forum since the beginning, and I have NEVER heard a RED camera owner complain about quality or reliability. There have been some teething troubles with the beta cameras, but most have been quickly dealt with by RED.

Furthermore, RED seems to be improving enormously on delivery times. Scarlet is shipping on time, or at least within speaking distance of it.

So what's your beef?

David, I think Mr Buzzkill just wants to vortex this otherwise constructive and interesting exchange into banhammer territory.

I would be very surprised if President Obama didn't show up at the factory for a photo op this election season. Honestly, it's incredibly inspiring to see the US leading in this kind of technology and manufacturing again and Jim has done this single handedly.
Having said that, it's also a little sad that any kind of commitment to domestic manufacturing has become so much of an anomaly here that it is now news worthy that things are "made in USA".

What a great tone for your 4th post since your joining date of Sept. 2009, I'm sure you have contributed so much that your comment might sound legit... "cough" "cough"... or not.

But honestly, the products coming from Nikon's Thailand plant are very nice quality and it's hard not to wonder how affordable Scarlet could be...

Reality is a bitch, isn't it? Is the world really ready to applaud the creation in the U.S.A. of cameras costing thousands of dollars in the middle of the economic situation in which we are? People, come down to reality! Of course you can manufacture in the U.S.A when the final tab is in the thousands $$$ for only a few to afford it while prohibitive for the majority of people out there working their butts off everyday to make ends meet. If you can afford a $20K package you go on your knees and thank God, not the manufacturer.

I am really suprised how many people think that scarlet is over priced. Considering its specs, build quality, beautiful images, we are getting an amazing deal. think about the industry before red was around. Literally nothing for professional cinema that didn't cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

While working on The Amazing Spider-Man [the first movie shot on Epic], I had the opportunity to see a bit "behind the scenes" at RED. What they've built right here in California is astonishing.
Are the CMOS pickups actually made in California? I sincerely don't know the answer; I was told several years ago they were made in the Philippines, but was never able to confirm it.

The comment about "how cheap something could be" makes me sick.
the price level you're expecting is based on exploitation of people - a system
we western have created and which will strike back badly in the not too distant future.

you are basically agreeing on a VERY unbalanced global situation.

food we buy come from thousands of kilometer away, served directly in front of our nose
and we pay rediculously cheap money for goods that are not even appreciated anymore.

We are soaked in luxory. It takes a lot of effort to create things. Labour is not cheap - shouldn't be
Everybody want's to have a nice Meal for dinner after a hard day of work. Everybody deserves it.

Edit: the off topicness might seem confusing - i just think in genneral that for us western-ers life is too cheap
and goods are under appreciated.
