I would think that RED EPIC and Scarlet being made in California would be big news... apparently not.

We have set the goal of creating jobs in the US . It is certainly a precedent for us. Apparently this is not big or important news... to the news gatherers.

It appears to be an assumption that everything electronic should be made in China. Why not? Apple is.

I am quite surprised that no big publication seems to be the least bit interested in the fact that there is another option.

No matter.

RED continues to beat its Asian counterparts in every respect.

Designed in CA. Prototyped in CA. Manufactured in CA.

"The Hobbit" "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" "Prometheus" "The Muppets" "The Amazing Spiderman" "Jack the Giant Killer" "Contagion" "Underworld 4" "The Great Gatsby" "Total Recall"....

I'd like to know more. Specifically what have you discovered to be the advantages?

I don't mean by bashing any other countries industry. I'm hoping its more than a form of patriotism or national pride. Both noble but I think you are the type that makes smart business decisions (except for trying to start a camera company from scratch, besides that).

I can contact a few friends at NBC. You deserve much respect and attention. Very few inspire me but you and your team makes my dreams a reality. Thanks Jim.

The advantages? How about 5K and REDCODE RAW at 100fps in the size of a match box?

Jim.

I and many with me are glad that you achieve your goals.

I think that in a stumbling American economy, you're right. This is big news.
And a good example for many, not only US companies - to invest and prosper from closeness to the development and mindpower.
That is eventually what will let economies survive. The "Export all development and manufacturing to somewhere else" mindset, will in the long term make all those countries that choose that road very poor, allthough it will make some individuals very rich in the shorter perspective. But the logic is blatant. As jobs are layed off and there is less local production and development, the countries themselves become poorer in all respects and eventually will lose their power to even buy. This is an inherrent catch of the combination of globalisation and capitalism in its purest form.

Now... I am not suggesting you're not a captalist... :)

But for many of us, living far off from the US with their own countries having their own economical issues, this is not what makes us sing and dance.
Your products are.

I can see tha larger scale of your project, but it is taking up the Epic with a set of masters that really makes me smile.
Have to admit that there and then I don't really care that much as to where either of the products were manufactured...

Speaking of which: Will you take your lenses "home", too?

Indeed... But give them some time.

You make the best cameras ever (that anyone can afford) AND if that wasn't enough, they are being made in the US.

I mean, it's pretty incredible. Sooner or later, it will be big news... for them too.

The German way of creating things.

Well since I'm in Canada I think it's pretty awesome ... with NAFTA and everything. Plus I'm a dual national, so I've always thought, why farm out work away from your economy especially when you can do a better job at home. If it's possible, keeping it in house makes perfect sense to me!

I'm 100% for not having your camera made out of lead-laden plastic by an unpaid 9 year old in China.

But honestly, the products coming from Nikon's Thailand plant are very nice quality and it's hard not to wonder how affordable Scarlet could be...

This post makes me want to want to retire.

While working on The Amazing Spider-Man [the first movie shot on Epic], I had the opportunity to see a bit "behind the scenes" at RED. What they've built right here in California is astonishing. Manufacturing in California [or anywhere in the States] doesn't only apply if you're creating certain types of products, moving certain volumes [or lack thereof] or charging a particular price. They've set a refreshing manufacturing example that I wish more companies would follow.

guys who dont value that the red company creates jobs in their home country,
shouldnt be allowed to buy red products imho.
especially the guys screaming scarlet is too expensive.
someone who cant see what great products for very affordable prices red builds + giving 400 guys and ladies a job they can rely on and make a living, should get on the bad attitude list.
my opinion.
applause from me for building the cams in the US.
