  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MacBook Pro 2016 Thoughts

just as a metric, how does maxed out laptop compare to trashcan?

Which version of the trashcan? What tasks? Early notes suggest that the new MBP, like many laptops, struggles with sustained high demand tasks that strain the limited cooling capacity of the form factor.
If your use case is mobile DIT work, with a couple of the right cables/adapters - and one of the new RED USB-C mag readers, the new MBP should be great for backing up cards (although there are plenty of much lower cost solutions that aren't that much slower) on the run. For transcodes, I'd strongly suggest a laptop cooler, maybe a couple small fans, ...

Not sure how to compare MBP to nMP trash can. Like Blair says, lots of different configurations. The MBP has the advantage of newer ports and faster RAM and faster internal SSD. nMP has option for superior GPUs and is dual GPU to begin with. And of course has the ability to hold more RAM and isn't crippled by a mobile GPU. All things considered a 2.9GHz 15" MBP should perform favorably compared to a quad-core trash can with 16GB and D500 GPUs. The trash can will win out still on GPU-intensive tasks, primarily those that will use both GPUs or tasks that are CPU intensive without being crippled by the memory speed.

Oh, and for those of you not committing to the 10.12.2 beta installs of OS X, Apple released the final today. Definitely recommended for the new MBP. It seems to address 99% of all the issues. Battery drain is still a problem for some, and I can duplicate it at times here too, it always seems to be graphics/GPU related. And not necessarily specific to the AMD GPU. But I think it's a software issue and will be fully addressed at some point soon. Even for those who seem to be having real problems with it.

LOL @ the MacRumors hate machine. They're all whining that Apple removed the estimated time remaining... Nevermind this was missing from most of the 10.10 and 10.11 betas as well but still included in release versions. Been gone from the 10.12 betas the whole time, but now gone in the release and everyone is thinking it's an MBP battery life conspiracy. Apple should have removed it long ago. Estimated time remaining on notebook battery life is always a pie in the sky sort of thing anyway.

Estimated time remaining was some sort of a New Cupertino practical joke anyway and it's not unusual for them to just ditch what they cannot adequately implement.

Well the good news is that if the GPU in $3K notebook worked okay you could now be using the touch bar in Photoshop, as long as you pay subscription and are hooked on the system for the rest of your creative life and connect through DP > HDMI adapter on external monitor with battery saving 16GB and internal longer lasting non-self-replaceable batteries. And it's thinner. Brilliant times.

GPU thing might be taken care of when 300 Billion is reached.

Thanks Jeff, Blair for the comments.
The trashcan has maxed out memory and graphics memory - but I meant if I travel to say asia or africa with that and a camera and portable drives can I edit / light grade on the road.
Understood not the best for large transcoding tasks.

OMG, thank you Andrew ! ... but it didn't work for me. Anyone get it to work?

This does not work. That is the variable used to enable/disable the startup chime on systems that actually support it. There is no chime on these new MBPs and won't be unless Apple decides to add it back into the EFI level functions. The systems boot so fast, I can see why they nixed the chime. OTOH, I wish it would give us some form of chime or feedback when we perform a function like resetting the SMC or PRAM.

Honestly,
As I'm always up super early before any one else...
I am happy they nixed the chime... :)

Too many times over and over I forget that I had the volume all the way up the night before and super early in the morning as I start it up again, that dam thing ends up scaring the crap out of any one sleeping in... He he

Sleeping in? Yowsa. I want to get on your next show! hehe

Cheers - #19

And you will... :)

Btw, as you'll see by the way I'll operate the Film School, I don't like to overwork myself nor any one else... I just don't believe in it... A fresh mind will always work in overdrive... When that mind and body are no longer fresh, then mistakes get made and people also get hurt... Ultimately the final work suffers... NOT my style!!

Rocket X with 2016 MBP

Rocket X with 2016 MBP

Anyone get the 2016 MBP working with a Rocket X / TB2 or TB3 Enclosure?

I've tested with my 2016 MBP/TB3toTB2 adapter/Sonnet TB2, and it seem that there's no difference between with and without the Rocket X.. Same rendering time

Good news on the eGPU front, my films sponsor AKiTiO has figured out how to run their eGPU Thunderbolt 3 box on the new MacBook pro as well as on Windows systems. I'm figuring out a possible Reduser group buy on their NODE TB3 box and a future pro eGPU box. Nvidia GTX cards and Red Rocket-x are working..More info coming soon..

Just ordered the new Dell XPS 15 and a Google pixel phone. I expect a hard transition for the next couple of weeks, but then I am divorcing apple for the time being.
Apple, I loved you, when you were a simple sexy girlfriend who could do nice things.... You become a complicated wife that gives me threads (alerts) all the time, making me deal with things I don't want on my computer (FaceTime, iMessage, siri), and sometime shut down the door when in panic.

PS Just a joke. No offense intended to any woman (nor to my lovely wife...)

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with mine. Performance wise is not that much of an improvement to my 2012 Retina. Have to use filmsy adaptors for usb3 to usb c, and no hdmi is a step backwards. The screen is nice, the touch bar interesting but I keep hiting the siri button while typing. The trackpad when using final cut seems a bit arbitrary on press, sometimes I can select and drag and sometimes I have to fight it to select.

Space gray is nice.

Probably will sell it as soon as this 32 gb replacement comes. A bit of a disaster, this launch.

Cant however shake the feeling of disappointment and really lack of "connection" with it. Hard to put this in words.
