  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MacBook Pro 2016 Thoughts

I'm really starting to question whether a juicy GPU in a mobile device even makes sense. I have a MBP with the GT750 GPU and I have now had the motherboard replaced three times due to GPU panic errors. I have been getting about six months of use between boards. I think the heat created internally is just too much and either the solder gives or something breaks down in the GPU itself. My MBP is the generation after the one that had so many issues that Apple had to address the issues via blanket coverage. These issues may be part of the reason Apple lags in internal GPU advances.

My Applecare runs out in January. Once the GPU goes again I am really going to have to think about where to go next. I'll push Apple to replace the GPU for free (again) but that is not a sure thing. One thing is certain, I would not consider buying any MBP without applecare.

No GPU issues on mine, 15", 460, 2tb, 16gig. Yo Ketch I had some battery length issues too at first, it was only giving about 3-4 hrs on a full charge, After talking to apple support randomly they asked me to reset PRam and now it gets a full 7 to 8 hrs with average use. They didn't have an explanation for it but it worked. If you wanna try it - Shut computer down, then start it up, Immediately on start up hold Command+Option+P+R all at the same time for about 20-30 seconds, after you let go it then boots up. Might be worth a try.

yea im on the boat of, maxed out or just dont expect my laptop to do much... but i think im going to wait for that next batch in january

I would follow Jeff's notes. Resolve with UHD/4K footy is a desktop task, unless you are way more patient than I. If, big IF, Apple releases a serious upgrade of the trash can by NAB 2017, I'd be very interested in seeing what it can do as a Resolve client. IMO, until then, it's Windoze/Pascal (or Linux) or alternatives to Resolve.

Cheers - #19

Thanks Brody,

Doing that now... :)

Btw, if any one is interested I just put for sale my Mid 2012 MBP 15" just Refurbished at Apple... http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...shed-by-Apple)&p=1694353&posted=1#post1694353

for desktop im running a 8 core ivy bridge xeon with 2x maxwell titans. totally fine. currently i have a late 2013 mbp 15" but def like the idea of a system with USB-C/TB3 laptop for travel.

Resetting the PRAM forces a battery re-calibration so that could be why it helped. I would also recommend doing a PRAM reset any time the OS is updated or reinstalled. Or any time you think the system isn't running quite right.

The OS X 10.12.2 beta just released a couple days ago is also highly recommended for these systems. I know it's not usually sound advice to run off the latest beta unless you're needing it for development work or something, but this has the latest GPU drivers and other support for the new MBP. It's running well on mine.

I agree with most people here.

Yes the Display and Keyboard are great, the form factor anyways.

Got it almost maxed out but with 1TB not 2TB

Love pretty much all of it. And the issue with the no magsafe is kind of a bummer on the other hand it's so handy you can plug
it into any of the ports and even either way, which is great.

TB3 yes it's fast got the new reader and it empties 64gb of R3D's in around 2 minute, pretty fast indeed.

For the most part people use Sony, C-fast or Red Minimags which all need an external reader. SD Card Reader would have been nice but if you hold the Macbook pro and look at the side you see that there wasn't any space for it.

I got these bugs are the moment (haven't got the newest Sierra beta though):

Crashes if copying a lot of files, had to deal with a DNG Raw workflow (:cuss:)
and the the macbook crashed 4 times on me. Had to do the transfer of 400gb in 2 steps to make it work...

Premiere is buggy (self shuts a lot) and I also get the odd graphics error (got the 460).

I'll wait for the next update and if it didn't fix it let Apple fit it.

At this stage I still can use 2014 Macbook Pro so, I personally would wait to take it on Set and rely on it...

To dump data on it exclusively works fine but as proper DIT Station I would wait a little bit longer personally.

I had almost the same Problems (Graphics Problem) when the first 2012 Macbook Retina came out and it proofed to be a very reliable machine (after updates) so don't let my experience put anybody off to buy it...

I unloaded 2 1TB REDMAGs the other day and I transferred over 10TB between two Thunderbolt RAIDs connected to my MBP this weekend and no issues with lots of files... So far it's been problem free, but all the reports coming from various places, even with most of the issues or complaints being minor and typical of a new product launch, have me on edge a bit. It seems like there's a handful of new reports every day.

Try resetting the SMC. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Just got my wife's 13" yesterday and about after an hour of setting up and installing app one of the USB-C ports stopped working. Several hours later I realized the battery had been draining even though the charger was plugged in. The computer would recognize the charger plugged into any of the 3 remaining USB-C ports (chimed when connecting), but said the battery wasn't charging. Tried resetting the SMC and it worked! The USB-C port came alive and the charger worked.

Also, during software install procedures I restarted the computer once and it wouldn't boot. It hang on the Apple logo forever. Hard reset it. Same thing, except it finally booted, but to a white window on the login screen with a spinning wheel. Eventually it said a critical update needed to be installed but failed and that the computer couldn't be started until that update installed. Did another hard reset and it started, taking longer than usual which I attribute to the critical update install.

So something definitely quirky with these Touch Bar MBPs, which is why I'm leery of buying a 1st gen myself. I had a 1st gen Retina MBP and that had graphics, LCD, and screen glass issues that Apple eventually ended up replacing after 3 years with a new model.

Anyways, try the SMC reset.

For those of you getting a new MBP, here's what I would suggest to get everything running smoothly. After initially powering on and setting up your AppleID or whatnot, the first thing you should do is install the latest OS X 10.12.2 beta (on beta 6 as of this posting). If you are using FileVault encryption, let it finish encrypting everything on initial setup before doing the OS update.

Once the OS is updated and the system has come back up, shut it down. Power back on and do a PRAM reset (CMD+P+R) hold down the keys and let the system reset itself a time or two to be sure. It's a bit trickier now that there's no start-up chime and the thing launches so fast. Once you release the keys, it will boot up.

Start with that and then install apps and go from there. For those with the 15" MBP, I would also recommend switching off the Fast Graphics Switching in the power settings panel. It will mean your system will always use the discreet GPU or the "high performance" graphics. This helps to smooth out a lot of hiccups for those who go in and out of apps that can utilize the GPU. And that graphics switching, when enabled, has caused a lot of havoc on MBP systems over the years, not just this current release model. Only turn it on if you absolutely need maximum battery life and are prepared for odd app shutdowns or other things. And it's on by default, which is very frustrating.

Thanks so much for the info Jeff and Ketch. I think im going to to Ketch's route initially.
Get the base model and see how it goes. As "it's nice to have a powerful laptop" but again it's a laptop and i will be doing my heavy work on a pc desktop. It would mostly be fore doing lighting cutting on the road and previewing offloaded files.
If it's not sufficient i'll go for a maxed out ver. By then im sure things will improve and maybe even an update.

Thanks all for the valuable information and experience.

To note that the "BETA: updates are only available thru the Apple site for Developers only...

So no one here unaware of goes nuts looking for the 10.12.2 Updates thru their Software Update... :)

Actually the betas are available thru beta.apple.com, but yes it does simplify things if you're a developer program member.

I think those instruction might be a bit out of date.

Minimal crashing with mine, only Premiere on two occasions, but none since upgrading to OS X 10.12.2b6. And Safari crashed once...

I did experience some battery weirdness yesterday. Not sure what it was, but I went from 95% charged to about 60% in 15 minutes while not doing anything noteworthy. I restarted and all seemed well after that. I'm on the MBP right now and have been for about half an hour, just doing email and now on RedUser and I'm at 99% after starting from a full charge. Actually just dropped to 98% as I was about to click post. So battery seems normal at the moment.

Have not experienced any graphics glitches with mine. Yet. I thought I saw a screen flicker with one of the Premiere crashes.

just as a metric, how does maxed out laptop compare to trashcan?
