  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mac vs. Windows...

Glad it's working for you, but Windows Security received a dismal Protection Score of 1.5 of 6 in this test...
http://www.av-test.org/no_cache/en/tests/test-reports/?tx_avtestreports_pi1[report_no]=124558

I'll also point out that it was the only product out of 24 tested that failed this certification
http://www.informationweek.com/security/antivirus/microsoft-security-essentials-loses-av-c/240142986

BTW, Windows Defender used by default in Win8 received a Protection Score of only 2 out of 6

Well, that and Malwarebytes free edition :)

I promise not to delete this one.

Jim

So why is Jim asking an age old question that has sparked heated fights on the web for decades and then promising not to delete it?

The answer is simple, current computers despite the best workflows and support from third parties in both hardware and software it's still not good enough.

RED is building their own computer.....

Think about it, a computer that has integrated offload support for REDmags (which we have seen in the HP towers). No lag in playback or render (via RED Rocket) Native 4k output via some sort of pcie REDray card to RED projector or 4k display. (With RED engineers the way they are this would not be a crazy request)

Call me crazy but I really don't think it's that big of a stretch

I think it would be fitting if Apple stock holders and Micro Soft/HP/DELL/etc. etc. etc. etc. stockholders would disclose their financial interest in one platform or the other. That way we can judge if a person's evangelism for Mac or PC has monetary roots. '-)
Stockholder---I have an iPhone, MacBook Pro, Mac-pro tower, and ipad. Would I drop Mac if something powerful and reliable came a long? YES

Mac. Still editing with FCP, but doing everything else with Adobe, and I suspect we'll be editing with them in the not too distant future. . Our Apple SAN has been running for seven years without a failure, we did have to add Promise to expand; sorry Apple bailed out on the SAN and server market. Our Monday morning engineering meeting is absolutely boring; nothing Mac is ever broken. We had some PC experience a few years ago and it was a mother-grabbing nightmare; never, never, never again.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

The security issue is definitely the achilles heel of Windows in my estimation. I've had both a PC and Mac in the same room on a few occasions, it just hit me in the face how many more issues the PC had than the Mac. I wish it wasn't so, becasue I'm no fanboy for Apple of anything, actually it's pretty disconcerting to watch their corporate arrogance grow and grow, and their communication shrink. Back in the 80's it was "Think Different", now it's "Loving it (the iPhone) is easy, that's why so many people do."

At this point, I just hope that the success of the iDevices turns into a momentum that powers the next Apple Prouser generation, but like everyone else still waiting...

What is your opinion?

Jim

Mac OS vs Windows - then Mac, no question.
Macintosh computers vs PCs - historically Mac, and still leaning Mac, but the lack of Mac Pro (or the comical excuse for a pro computer they are currently selling o/s Europe) makes me ambivalent. Whilst strategically speaking straddling pro and consumer segments is far from easy, they could and should be doing a much better job than they are now.

Agreed. I know PC can be made to be faster and meaning then current macs out there, but i stick with mac because they are reliable as hell and don't give me all the grief that all my windows experience have brought me. Tried the new windows 8 on my hackintosh and lost my mind and two days of my life. OS is key for me, so sleep with mac.

Windows 7 has been boringly reliable running CS6/Resolve on my custom PC.

if you are basing a windows discussion on Vista/XP etc. at least give Windows 7 Pro a try.

It works and works well.

I used Windows for years, and it always failed when I needed it most. Like a father that would get drunk and fall asleep on the couch instead of remembering to pick you up at hte baseball field.

I switched to Mac about 6 years ago, still in college, and all my problems, all my crashes, all my corrupted files just . . . vanished.

I know Windows has changed a lot, and he's trying to be better, but I just can't shake this feeling that going back to Windows would be like going back to the boyfriend that beats you "because he loves me".

Nick, sorry about your deadbeat dad and abusive boyfriend, but you can't blame that on an operating system. '-)

One would think that the Mac v Windows debate was played out. Guess it just takes a Jim Jannard to spark a fresh discussion, remarkably free from rancor.

IAC, the more interesting question is why Jim is asking. Idle curiosity? Perhaps. Deciding which platform to assign more engineering talent to or whether to drop support for one to simplify things? Maybe.

ATM, Apple has the great advantage of a ProRes4K codec with 4:4:4 color depth that is arguably the best 4K option on the market in terms of quality/payload/support for post work. DPX and OpenEXR at 4K is too much payload for 99% of the community. H.264 and other codecs designed for distribution are too weak for most post work. H.265 has just recently been ratified as a standard so its a possibility, though its design is aimed at distribution metrics so expecting it to shine in post is rather optimistic IMO.

Considering how many people on this thread prefer MACs, if Apple does get a legit workstation to market sooner than later along with continuing improvements in FCP-X (combined with a rapidly expanding portfolio of "helper" apps from 3rd parties) then most of the lost ground can be reclaimed. FWIW, I also anticipate that Apple will support UHD resolutions in a big way which could be a big plus.

I know Red collaborated with HP on that workstation, but my hunch is that Jim was asking today more from an Apple bias... the percentages on here do seem to lean in favor of Macs, but I think that is because many PC users don't have time to read these posts because the are tinkering/customizing/fixing/rebooting their computers. I'm not bashing... just jokingly explaining why there aren't more PC posts here :w00t: :badputer:

Windows. If you can't find someone that offers a machine you want to buy, then you can build it. (not that everyone should, some people mix with technology like oil does with water)

Windows 7. I like the openness. It's sort of like Red. That said, I'll never buy into Windows 8, until they stop forcing users to work a certain way (if it ain't broke, why change it)

It's funny that people have mentioned using Windows one time and having a ton of errors. I used my sister's Mac once and it crashed multiple times. Funny. It's like our experience on an OS is determined by how we feel about it. If we like it, it runs fine, if we don't like it, it crashes.

I see it more as just roughage... you know, filler to occupy our minds while we wait for the power supply parts to complete the Dragon so RED can supply us with something to REALLY talk about! '-)

For me it is Mac. Sure - the custom windows workstations are much faster then Mac Pros (for now) - but the one advantage of the Mac platform for me is the reliability.
I know how fast (slow) it is and I can plan my work and deadlines accordingly knowing I won't let my clients down.
On a windows I might finish in half the time - but I also might not be able to finish in time...

It's like having a race horse that always finishes 2nd in every race and wins $2500 USD (Mac) vs a race horse that sometimes finishes first and wins $5000 USD - but many other times doesn't even place or finish (Win).
I'll take the Mac any day...

There are two other very important aspects:

1. These days if you are working to make a living (getting paid for your work) you gotta have the cards - RED ROCKET, GPU, RAID, A/V, etc... These cards cost way more then the actual workstations and once you have them the difference between Mac and Win is negligent. And this is when the reliability again kicks in...

2. Portability. When it comes to location work the Win can't come anywhere close to MacBook Pros or even an iMac with Thunderbolt enclosure full of the above cards. And the difference is even more obvious when you don't have the cards...

So for all the above my vote goes to Mac...

PS: The 4K apple display and new Mac Pro - both coming this year - will only strengthen my loyalty to Mac...
