Mac vs. Windows...

Pretty much same as phil there. I'll do what the job spec demands but...

I've been through every iteration of PC and Mac since the 286s running DOS on the PC side and the Mac Quadra Avids in the mid-late 90s. I'll take a properly configured PC each and every time. Had so many more issues with the macs than the PCs. I always feel with a mac I am being dictated to about how I am allowed to work, what formats I am allowed to use and how much input I get to have.

The retina macbooks are great and I may end up getting one but if there was a PC laptop with the same display I'd take that in a heartbeat.

I get annoyed when on a job there is a demand for pro res transcodes and I have to either use the 2010 macbook or investigate crazy workarounds on the PC so have started trying to give dnXHD instead where possible

Thinking about all that reminds me of AmigaOS and BeOS, i liked both of them back in their time way more than Win/OSX/LNX today.
Makes me wonder how those would look today, if they had survived.

So, when is REDOS coming? That highly for a RED workflow optimzed OS without all the bloatware and a really cool user interface? ;)

Mac. Also, Apple hardware, as it has always lasted longer and performed better for my needs.

It's worth noting, too, that although I am waiting for the new MacPro to drop, I have been editing and finishing in 4k on my three year old MacBook Pro because of the brilliant proxy solution that Final Cut Pro X offers.

Mac guy. In the process of transitioning from FCP7 to FCP-X and I think it's going to be ok. Just purchased the 15" MBP Retina which is awesome. Hoping the new Mac Pro will materialize some time this year.

Migrated my iTunes to PC but still have ol' FCP Studio on my 2007 Mac Pro for certain FCP-only effects plugins and Prores encoding. Thinking about getting a new Mac just for the extra processor oomph but, like so many Mac users, I'm waiting to see what happens with the Mac Pros. Right now I say for anything new it has to be PC but if Apple makes a big enough move then it could be Mac (or both with Bootcamp :001_cool:).

I use whatever the clients need. But I own Mac personally...

I have always been a PC user but I finally own a Retina MacBook Pro laptop and I really like it. Reasons:
- no pc lapto is even close in hardware. Build quality and components are fantastic
- the operating system is really getting better all the time. So many little nice things that makes life easier, especially when it comes to media. With windows, no improvements at all for a long time.
- Final Cut Pro seems to be the fastest editing program out there. I really like it.

Biggest downside with Mac is
- getting a beefy computer currently is tricky. I really want 200GB RAM 16 cores etc. If Apple releases something like this we may switch over 1 of our vfx computers.

Currently we have 2PC and 1 mac.

I've been cutting 4k natively on my brand new PC that I built in 2hrs with off the shelf components that cost less than I would get if I sold my 2010 15" Macbook pro.

If you're looking for a no-excuses powerful tool, you should be using a PC. It's not as easy as a Mac, but you have significantly more powerful hardware available, and much more potential for configuration.

I understand why people use Macs, but if you're dedicating as much time in to knowing your post production hardware and tools as you are in knowing your camera, then PCs will reward you with better hardware options that can be kept cutting edge while also costing significantly less than Apple.

Edit: it's worth mentioning that Apple makes the best laptops by far. When it comes to desktops the's really no argument that PC hardware is better for those that demand high performance machines.

Let's not forget Tom Lowe's Gaming Rig/4K Video Editing build.

It is very interesting to read from many PC folks who swear by their Mac laptops as the best there is, especially the retina models.

Mostly, I am curious why you are asking, Jim. But, if you must know, I had my first Mac in 1984 (wish I still had that one!) and, having raised a family in the interim, we have owned probably 30 Macs in that time. As an aside, owning just a little Apple stock has more than paid for all that technology.

Apple almost lost me in the mid-90's; things were looking pretty bleak. But I have always respected Steve Jobs and his return really did revitalize the company - financially, culturally and in terms of design superiority. Apple's technology is still excellent and I respect their innovation - even if their size does sometimes force them to think a bit mainstream.

A lot of folks bash them for not bringing out a new Mac Pro but I do think they will surprise and delight when they introduce a new top level machine. My guess is that it will be different, perhaps somewhat modular, but it will be a very high performer.

This is not an anti-PC post (I gave that up long ago - lol) but, insofar as you asked, I have always enjoyed the Mac UI, my Macs have always been able to do everything I wanted them to, and I never saw a reason to move over. Still don't.

We use all mac at our offices. MacPro towers for work stations, apple servers with Promise RAIDs through fiber for storage. Macbook Pros for field work (retina and non).

Well, it has a high res display. Give me a pc laptop with the same and I'll pick that :)
