Hi,

Any idea on when the new mac pro will be released? I'm trying to get a second system for a number of projects in the coming month, wondering if I should hold this purchase if the new one is going to be released soon.

I'd say hold the purchase and if you can make any loaner or rental deal, go with that for now.

Of course when new machines come out, there's no assurance that current software and hardware work smoothly, so you want to give a lead time for that, too.

Hi Kaku,

Thanks for the advice. Any idea how far away is the next update for mac pro? estimation?

I'm going to say it's most likely within the next 3 to 10 weeks. Most will probably agree that new Mac Pro systems will arrive with the new Core i7 "Nehalem-EP" Xeon CPUs. Intel has supposedly released the final design to fabrication as of about last week. That means we're about 2 to 3 weeks away from the first chips entering OEM channels.

However, with 32nm mobile CPUs arriving in the 3rd quarter of this year and prototypes of 32nm "Westmere" Xeons already being shown to OEMs by Intel. I'm going to expect the 45nm Nehalem-EP to be rather short lived. There's a good chance we'll see 32nm Nehalem-EX 8-core CPUs by the end of this year with 32nm 8-core "Westmere" Xeons shipping sometime in the 2nd quarter of 2010. If Intel is able to hold to their roadmap schedule, we could see CPU bumps with the next couple Mac Pro updates.

Jeff,

Thanks always for your intelligent guess and the observations.

Nowadays I'm thinking if rental companies can get the latest models, rent them each year instead of buying.

I heard a whisper of March 29th as the ship date for the new Pro's on MacRumors. I really want one. Combined with Snow Leopard, these puppies are gonna be sweet.

Anyone know when Snow Leopard is coming? Everyone says Q1 09. That's a little vague don't you think?

Computer rental companies should be able to rent you a box specced out just how you want - might make more sense for a business.

How can anyone justify renting a system that they will use almost constantly and it only costs $4K (give or take) to purchase outright? I guess I'm trying to figure out a scenario where that actually does make sense?

Jeff,

I've been purchasing for over 20 years, pretty much every most expensive Macs but getting to be hard to keep up.

Japanese rental companies don't offer the latest models, but they are dead cheap to rental.

wait until NAB

wait until NAB

NAB early April in Las Vegas is not too far away. It should not be a bad idea to wait a bit longer until NAB product announcements.

Great feedback.
This is tough, i need another workstation for a tv program we are shooting.

I plan to get the latest macbook first if thats the case. I only plan to output the final format in PAL, will getting a macbook pro for this purpose a better move?

So my plan is to render it to prores and output them to SD PAL for final product.

Wait for i7 Mac pro or get New Mac book Pro with 4/8GB DDR3 'til may 2009...
Just got MBP (8Gb, anti-G) & happy with it.

Yes, seems like MBP is what I'll be getting for the current project.

Is the latest MBP decent enough to complete the post work for output intended for SD PAL?

A production gave it to me to test it for a movie in march. It seems quite fast and stable. I really like the new led cinema display also, I know it's glossy, but the images are beautiful and the calibration easy. It's the new mbp 15'' 2.8 4gb of ram. Anyway probably in the end of March they will come out with new processors.

I've noticed with this new macbook pro 2.8 a quite slow rendering in Apple Color, could it be because it uses an nvidia card? My macbook pro 2.33 is really fast with apple color and it has an Ati.

New MacBook Pro 17' with 8 hour battery...

I saw that MBP 17' got updated...I was wondering what users were saying about that? 17 inch screen...Is glossy better than anti-glare?

Debating to get new one or get a refurbished one by Apple?

The new ones have a Matte screen option for $50 more :)

Mike,

Now you don't have to wait, the new models of Mac Pros got released.

Jeff- the new one's baseline price with the fastest Nehalem's only are $5899
with no other options.

add memory and a graphics card and raid controller and storage and you are talking over $10K easy.

That would seem a good reason to rent, especially as 32nm chipsets are less than a year behind this new 45nm chipset. 16 Cores, etc.

Of course, Im biased being someone who is building 2 FCP and 1 Adobe Premier suites to rent to low budget filmmakers, not commercial guys like you who can justify and write off the expense.
