  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LumaTech Illuminas performance

What's the cost of that 5-lens kit?

Does anyone have, or know who might, have a set of the new Illuminas for rent? ...that will ship to the Denver, CO area.

PM me if need be or email to jeff at rojomojo dot net

Dang, almost double the price of RPPs for a name with no brand recognition (i.e. Zeiss, Arri or Angeneiux or even Fuji).

lol. Lomo is pretty well known :) and they are 1/2 the weight/size of RPP - which is where the $ is going.
Edit: also shares the same german schott glass as those companies listed (schott has also gone up in price)

@ Jeff- Paul Nordlin will ship and rent them to select people. I'm going to rent them for a week to test as well when my Epic(s) arrive

Nail on head there, Tim. Also, going from 1.8 (RPP) to 1.3 is a serious step up, too.

What is the distance of "last" focus mark before infinity, on each lens?

- On the Cooke panchros it is between 120ft on the long lenses and 30ft on the wides - with a workable distance to inf.

The 135mm is here in South Florida. Our client, Trinity Greer of San Antonio was with us last week (he is shooting with Illuminas right now in New Jersey). He is the first client to inspect the lens and asked if he could buy it on the spot. Unfortunately it has been sold to our dealer in Taiwan. The lens is absolutely gorgeous and we have placed a large order with the factory. Because of the backlog created by believers new orders will take 3 months for delivery.

ouch.... 3 months! Any test charts to share.

FRED, when will you have a full set of these new versions in a room and also the 135mm... I'll fly over especially and test them for the RED world. (and for myself)
Since I have the so called ..OLDER SET. I'm very keen for myself to see what the current set can do.

So many people asking to see real world tests... and there is nothing out there to compare.
Since I rate the RED PRIMES as the sharpest and cleanest of them all (even over the MASTER PRIMES)
Ill do a back to back with them and yours, slice the frame straight down the middle.. blow it up to 800% and post it on this site.. every lens.

If you can do that... and they are to within 95% of the RED Primes for clarity and edge sharpness... then you will see some serious sales from everyone.

If they are as good as I hope they are... I'll purchase a set off you there and then !

Do you have any representative in Canada? Recently try to contact with some guy I google related ILLUMINA products- didn't get any success yet... Why don't you guys have an e-bay store or so? "ASK" for the prices this days - you gonna be kidding :) Makes me think like I'm looking for custom made Panavision for >$300K, cheers :)

I think new ZEISS CP Lenses worth think of them. Especially with opportunity to EXCHANGE mount ON LENS directly! We can start using them right away with EF mount, which is quite useful as long as many of us still have huge inventory related to DSLR workflow. Than, once grown up:), re-place mount to PL on lens (around $300 per lens) as well as camera mount. Why not? Doesn't look like poor guy last resort to me at least :) The only problem I see these ZEISS not that fast :( just 2.9 max. But sharpness is OK.

Unfortunately, I am not surprised. The claims being made about those lenses by their US distributor was typically lofty to the point of causing cautious suspicion within my better judgement.

My suspicion was slightly confirmed during the first time I had seen Illuminas tested with other lenses. This was at the Oregon lens shootout by Ryan Walters. Remember how soft the wides looked? Remember the wide Illumina used on the roof (station 3)? I gave the Illuminas the benefit of the doubt; that perhaps the lens had something wrong with it... a loose element or something.

Now this.

I say now, my suspicions seem to have been justifiably legitimate. Seems the wides have some issues, no? I'd test a set, happily, but to be honest, have yet to come across any in LA. Not one set. That doesn't help their case either.

The fact that they are t1.3 means nothing considering how extremely soft they are. To me even at 5.6 they looked terrible. I always thought from test footage the sides/corners had a weird softness to them, but now it's more obvious. Too bad, if they lived up to the Distributors claims these lenses could have been amazing.
