I spent a good part of today evaluating the latest rev of the Illuminas and comparing them against the Cooke Panchros. Why those two? For no other reason than they are the two sets I'm evaluating for purchase.
I was able to put both sets up on a projector and then in a testing bay to see how they shake up. Frankly, what I had hoped was that the Illuminas would rise to meet the Panchro image performance, or at least get close enough that the two additional stops would make that set a slam dunk for me. What I found was not quite that. I was able to shoot both lens sets on an epic in 5k, but have not had a chance to look at the captured footage. I'll do that tomorrow and post my personal conclusions.
But as a teaser to that, first let me definitively state that the Illuminas do NOT have any exterior lens extension with focusing. Both sets of lenses have internal focus movements only. So that rumor is stomped. And they are not plastic. And they do not suffer from any obvious quality problems. And in a couple of key performance characteristics (speed, breathing) they beat the Panchros. In a couple of other key areas the Panchros seemed superior (CA, focus falloff, distortion, flaring).
I had hoped that I would be driving home tonight with a clear winner of my dollars. But they were close enough that I'm going to have to dive into the Epic 5K footage to make the call.
