That's cool and everything, I just want to see proof that these cameras can do what Red says they can do. Im sure there are tests with moving subjects as well, why couldn't they release those?

So I guess what I'm getting at is - if they are going to show us small milestones and get the community buzzing about the cameras, then actually show us something impressive instead of just telling us it's impressive.

If you want to see the kind of image quality MX technology is capable of, download the Red MX sample reel and have a look. We fully expect the new cameras, including 2/3"Scarlet ( with the exception of 35mm DOF), to be capable of equal or better performance than what you see on this reel shot with Red One MX cameras.
Red has a track record of more than delivering on its promises, just not as fast as we, or they for that matter, would like.

Chill!

Chill!

I find it amusing that there folks with a handful of posts suddenly popping up to DEMAND some action and response from RED. "I've been waiting long enough!!"

Hold your breath until you turn blue and I am sure Jim will give in. :nopity:

Never said that, but okay. You have a bigger number, so obviously you're far superior.

I'm pushing for something that shouldn't trigger such a defense. I want to see current footage. If they're gonna release little 2-second milestone videos, why not something substantial. Why wouldn't you want that?

And you don't?

We all want.

However RED stated they are being conservative to avoid mindless bad mouthing (by people who can't tell that a prototype is not perfect - me included) that ocurred before.

Some sample footage in case you've missed before:

I'm sure we'll see something substantial when the cameras are polished.

That makes sense, and I totally understand. Seeing as it is past the expected release date for the Scarlet, I just would have thought there'd be some footage out by now.

But alas, I'll just cry over my frustrating 5D Mark II.... :banghead:

There are "tech demos" and then there are Tech Demos. The focus video falls firmly into the former. It's a fun status update to demonstrate that it's doing something--anything. When you're creating something from scratch that's really exciting because often even a completely broken implementation is a big breakthrough.

Yeah this is exactly why a lot of us love RED. We get a glimpse in to the camera development and follow along as much talked about features actually start working. The original post of the "focus" video didn't mention it was shot on the Scarlet fixed. Jarred was just showing us that yes, auto focus with Canon lenses was actually working. This is a big deal because I am not aware of another non-Canon camera that can do this. A couple posts later Jarred mentioned that the video was shot on the fixed Scarlet prototype...again the first we had seen from an actual prototype. This was the first time we knew the prototypes were actually working.

There are plenty companies to follow that do it the normal way. I enjoy the peeks into development we get from RED.

Also, would you rather they spend their time shooting footage to show off? Or working hard getting the camera actually out the door and in the hands of users?

I'd love to see more footage too ... but I'd much rather have a camera in my hands than anyone at RED take precious time away to shoot footage to show off

I just assume that in testing, they would have done some shots with moving subjects and moving cameras. I would prefer to see tests like that, rather than lizards.

Beyond anything any other company would do

RED doesn't owe us being shown anything...the RED One is good enough proof for me, if you want to see what RED can do, buy a RED One, upgrade to the MX sensor and go shoot something...

Or maybe Canon or Sony or Panasonic will show you some tests of their cameras ahead of time that they're coming out with, or maybe you could also complain to the owner of their respective companies when they don't show some samples.

Too much complaining going on...

When the Epic and Scarlet comes it'll come, be patient, good things come to those who wait...

And you won't see any footage until they are ready to release. Why? Well because of what happened in the past... It seems that there are many people out there who will look at prototype footage and pick apart every flaw and then spread that info around like crazy. Even if it is a minor issue that has already been fixed and was pointed out to people in advance. So RED stopped posting prototype footage quite a long time ago. In fact, they did try to post some early shots from the 2/3" M-X sensor -- "Izzy" the lizard (and yes, Izzy moved.. a little) and a few others.. People critiqued the image quality, the "artistic" aspect and everything else. I would say that nearly 1/3 of the community were complete jackasses about the whole situation. So, no more footage or sample images until it's ready. And I have to say I can't blame them for that decision.

And you assume correctly. That doesn't mean they will show any of it publicly. We have been told repeatedly that samples and more info will be available before they start taking orders.

Careful what you wish for...

Wait till it's out, you're be overrun with example shots of peoples' pot-plants, pets, children, back yards, living rooms and any combination of all five.
Then, they'll be those annoying "How to switch on and set up your new camera" videos that look like they were shot by somebody's cat.

Then they'll be the first Scarlet music video/viral commercial/wedding video/Hitler spoof...

Ooh, I can't wait:)

True. 120 fps of people dogs is not going to be a good thing. If this hdr mode trickles down to scarlet I imagine it'll be used and abused to death ha

Jeff.
The times they have been a-changing, and RED is changing with them.

There are statements about cameras and workflows here and other places - in addition to on-set, that relate to betas from years ago that bite RED in their ass today - no matter how unrelevant they may be, because RED released unfinished footy that was analyzed to death. No matter how much I do miss those days, I think it's the only wise thing to do to let be...

I would LOVE to work on that beta footy and be on some sort of closed beta board, though...

Back from a two week test... should have more EPIC news soon.

Jim

Great! This place has been kind of bleak without you. Looking forward to some epic Epic news.
