LTO-3 Backup Onsite? Need your input please!

Could you tell us if you have tested the Guardian Maximus Raid-1 hardware solution. This is what we are using and have had no problems so far.

We do our LTO-3 back-up with our mac G4 at the hotel or in our motorhome when we have about 400gb of data. We run it overnight. If we are local we will LTO at the office.

I just got a mail from Quantum that says LTO 3A is not compatible to LTO3.

That is correct.

It is 100% NOT compatible.

It is a different (and much better) directory structure.

Just researched this at Quantum...

"Currently, the SuperLoader 3A User's Guide (81-81643-02) states that the SuperLoader 3A with LTO-3A drive can read from LTO-1 and LTO-2 media, and can write to LTO-2 and LTO-3 media. This information is incorrect. SuperLoader 3A with embedded LTO-3A drive will only work with new LTO-3 media, or LTO-3 media that has been previously been used in the SuperLoader 3A with embedded LTO-3A drive."

Regarding the LTO-3 tape itself--its just an Ultrium 3 tape. There aren't any special 3A tapes.

One issue that hasn't been discussed here is the use of tape drives in hostile locations (which is most locations I've worked in.) I, for one, don't plan to use tape archiving on set. Duplicate hard drives are sealed devices that may be used in a variety of dusty and temperate conditions and shipped to post facilities (or your archiving partner) for transfer to LTO-3 (or other format) in a controlled working environment.
