Though this doesn't mean they are going to make these, it does give us an idea of what they are thinking about.

Appears they are just trying to broaden protection on the shadow mark "RED" which being a common word and a color is not easily protected under trademark law. It would be a stretch to say that no one before RED has ever used the word "RED" in relationship to camera equipment. By adding other words (without spaces) to the name, in a variety of industry classes, they are able to more increase their intellectual property protection where trademarks are concerned. One problem RED will face in the future, however, as they grow and become a bigger target, will be trademark lawsuits from companies and individuals that used "RED" as the company, product or service name or part of the product or service name BEFORE Red's first claimed "use in commerce".

Sure RED is a great brand name! But I would not want to be tasked with defending it in court. Good thing Mr. Jannard has deep pockets.

I know something about this idea of a shadow mark combined with other terms (RedTunes, RedSpace, RedLine, etc.) being the owner of the word-only trademark "i4®" as it relates to Internet commerce and information, business software, retail sales, travel, services and etc. etc. as well as numerous other trademarks (i4vegas®, i4web®, i4health®, i4sites®, i4news®, i4business®, i4travel®, and etc.) as well as nearly 2,000 domain names and hundreds of active e-commerce sites all beginning with the letter "i" and the number "4" as in "eye for" (We have an Eye For Vegas, etc.). I started this process over 10 years ago and have spent a lot of money and time defending our i4 brand and trademarks and i4 is nowhere near as common as RED. However, 10 years later we have an extremely strong brand and very solid trademark protection for the use of i4 in just about any industry or class you can imagine because we have used "i4" brand on so many sites and in so many ways in commerce. This doesn't matter so much when you are small (we have over 1 Million customers now and have done over $100 Million in total sales) but when you get bigger and more profitable or become a public company, you become a target. One difference is that we actually have a world class email application, i4mail®, and active e-commerce stores, commercial software and services, information sites and etc. The sooner RED can put these products into the marketplace, the better will be their trademark protection.

Red's legal team certainly has their work cut out for them. My advice is that they begin actually using the above marks, and the word RED in particular, in commerce in as many industry classes as possible as soon as possible. Trademarks really only provide protection back to the first date of use, not the first date of filing.

Sincerely,

I want REDpod :)

Doesn't Red Head conflict with the Red Head lamps that have been around for quite a while? I'd be suprised if the trademark wasn't disputed given the title is already being used by a tool within the same industry. Having said that a fluid head by Red would indeed be great!!! :)

I thought RED wasn't going to go into anything third parties could do? Cameras i get, but OS, computers?
Surely this is for use within the RED facility and not for the public...

Just because Red gets a trademark on something, I don't think that means that it is CERTAIN it'll happen, or as you pointed out that it'll necessarily be a product aimed at the consumer market.

One reason RED may be trademarking the use of a name may not be to ever actually produce a product but instead to prevent someone else from doing so and therefore watering down the brand. If some joker came out with a RED HEAD tripod who was NOT affliated with RED then there may need to be an expensive and time-consuming lawsuit.
