I'd just like to call a standing ovation for the producers, writers, cast and crew of the Series LOST which celebrated its finale last night.

Superb storytelling, impeccable directing, magnificent acting, beautiful visuals, realistic vfx, flawless production & location mgmt, incredible timing and a tremendous respect for the audience.

Bravo!

I thought the finale was terrible. And, that's after having set myself up for knowing that a lot of stuff wasn't going to be answered... But, I at least figured that they had something good in store for the grander mystery of the show. What we've all been building up to for 6 years...

The whole false timeline was completely contrived and had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the show and was there solely for the purposes of executing their contrived ending which also had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the show.

Major cop-out and exactly what I seem to remember them saying they weren't going to do... not someone's dream, or some unexplainable mystery that you aren't supposed to ask questions about... there's a light... and everybody dies, and these people all had to reunite in a false reality so they could move on to the light..... just dont' ask questions... lame...

Glad I only watched 30 minutes of one episode 6 years ago and thought.... nah, it's not for me.. Phew!

Respect the cast and crew guys. Regardless of how you feel about the particulars, they raised the bar and made a significant impact on network television.

Again I say Bravo to anyone and everyone that was involved. My hat is off.

I too thought it was bad... 6 years of questions and still none are answered. Not to mention the creators' circle jerk for an hour and a half beforehand.

Plot driven mystery... not character driven like they lead themselves to believe...

OK, so I have the complete season DVR'd.... Should I watch them all in a marathon weekend an watch the conclusion as a true finale.... or should I watch a specific episode or 2 then watch the finale?

Your opinions?

All of them, or just the end?

Lost Finale: Failure to fully execute.

I think ultimately I liked not knowing what the island wasn't some lame collective conscience of human choice without any really explanation of why this really happened.

It makes me think, was there anything really great about Lost under the perfect shiney production, or was it an awesome hype machine?

I liked it. Just like in life, you're not going to get an answer to every question. I knew people would be bitching about the ending no matter what it was.

I thought it was actually kind of a sad ending... sad as in very emotionally sad. I thought the series was great over all - and now that it's being imitated (not so successfully), you can see how strong the show actually was in retrospect.
Landmark TV - television will never be the same after this show.

Watch the whole season Scott, why not - marathon TV is one of the great pleasures of our wicked age!

I watched the finale last night...and it was the first time I had ever seen the show.

So, as a total outsider, it seemed to make total sense to me. Perhaps I am missing something or just not caught up with all of the storylines over the years, but it seemed like a perfectly appropriate ending that the people really did die in the plane crash and that all of this was Jack's last "Wizard of Oz"-like thoughts...some weird imaginative journey in his last moments of life with the people who he last saw in life. Did I get it right? :-)

After reading about a bunch of the episodes, some of their ideas sure seemed silly. Smoke monsters? Yikes...probably not the best show for me.

The effects sure weren't very well done, either, for a show that was so huge. But I hope if I'm ever hit with a 12" round rock, it's as lightweight as those on the "island" that were hitting Jack and gang. :-)

I should add, by the way, that the flashbacks were very moving and well done. Even though I had no back story, I sure did feel emotional in the moments when people were remembering.

I will also say that this show sure owes something to "Donnie Darko," no?

Everything about Lost was exceptional, crew to cast to writers to producers, nobody did TV better. Lost was more of a weekly movie than a TV show. But . . .

Purgatory was a cop out. We all knew they couldn't explain the island logically because they sold the show as a character study on a weird island, and they invented as they went along, to the point of digging themselves a hole to big justify. So, they copped out with the purgatory thing, and a heavy play on our emotions, and yes, I dropped a few tears. But . . . I really hoped for more of an explanation of what the island was and who or what created it.

They just executed production so well that they could have made the Geico Gecko the secret of the island, and I probably still would have cried. The beauty of Lost was how they had us all on the edge of our seats while so little was really happening. That's movie making.

Definitely all of them. Marathon style, skipping over the commercials. Awesome. :emote_popcorn:

Hi Mark:

I'm not convinced they did take the purgatory route.

Jack's father said "everything that's happened to you did happen to you".

I don't believe the final shot of the wreckage on the beach means everyone died in the initial plane crash. They didn't show a close-up of a key character dead in a plane seat for example.

We know the plane crash only happened because Desmond didn't push the button. We know another time path was created when they went back in time and destroyed that hatch. There was clearly a time travel (parallel universes) element in the show we may never fully understand... as if any human ever could fully comprehend the absence of time or the existence of parallel universes.

The key to the events which lead to each characters ultimate transformation is not "when" it happened, but that it happened somewhere along the circular path of their lives. If some people think those things happened along the path of their "after" lives, I have no problem with that, I just don't think that was explicitly stated or necessary for the ending to work. Remember the ending of "Somewhere in Time"?

a major let down. to be honest I felt this whole season was a relative misstep, particularly the last few eps before the finale. the finale was hackeneyed and repetitive. the emotional beats (and overbearing score) were overplayed all season long. its worst crime is that it portends be driven (as a show) by some overreaching logic and ends up falling back on some pathetic metaphysical hogwash that violates the logic of its own rules...

Wonder why they brought back all those characters at the end and failed to bring the recently killed (Widmore and his henchmen/women) what about faraday and mr. eko.. No use asking cause it's all bullsh*t...

Jack's father said "everything that's happened to you did happen to you".

And, Desmond also told him that "none of this matters", which is essentially the statement of the whole of season 6 and its finale... nothing that came before matters... everyone is dead. don't ask questions... just hold hands and feel good... lame...
