  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LOOM - ONLINE

IJust to confirm, Jarred: The red projector has a red ray player included, correct? Another question: with some manufacturers coming with 4K televisions, will the Red Ray Player be compatible with those? Any upgrade path planned for the output of the player, if, say, a new HDMI "2", or whatever comes that is compatible with 4K?

There are 2.. the REDRAY built into the projector, and a standalone. So you are covered both ways.

Sure , Sony has a system that lets you to split the frame in an over/under and use an incredibly expensive dual add-on lens to show dual 2k images...( lets ignore the fact that doing it that way shows a really shitty image for now)

Anyways.., you are wrong in your statement. 99% of every major theater using the sony 4k are not using the method you described ( thank god, because it sucks ) ..... they actually are using REALD which, in fact except for the XLS is alternating.

Indeed... and to illustrate how much the Sony simultaneous solution short-changes you as compared to a true 4K solution, check out the following graphic:

That's a lot of wasted pixels...

Speaking of which: Jarred, at NAB the Laser PJ was at 2K/8bit res, and I don't think the 4K/10bit upgrade ever made it to the show... have there been any public(ish) demos of it at 4K yet?

Thanks.

Have you guys worked on the contrast ratio. How many LCOS chips are you using. If you are using 2 LCOS chips you are still flashing images. So to say you are streaming 2 simultaneous image is correct, but you are flashing the 1 of chips 3 times(RGB) for each frame.

Unless you are using 6 chips(3 for left/3 for right)

Some of this info would be great to know.

I heard so much of this film. Looking forward to viewing it.

Thanks

Its a laser based device, not LCoS or DLP so the issues are different.

I have to say, I saw this projected at NAB. Until then, I didn't realize that 3D was "uncomfortable," but I wasn't really a big fan. When I saw this I was blown away by a) how comfortable and fluid it seemed; a fact I assume has to do with the simultaneous eye projection, and b) I thought the use of 3D made the whole experience seem very "real" - not gimmicky or spectacular, just more "present." It really did change my mind about the future of 3D.

Will REDRAY/Projector support TCP/IP or UDP streaming? So we can just render to a 'dailies' folder and then feed it to the projector without burning to a disk or copying to a USB drive and physically moving it to the projector?

Also will it support any other formats like H264 or DNxHD or will we need a secondary media server for those?

REDray is an Ethernet / WiFi network based, internal HDD and / or external HDD storage, dual codec device.

It decodes 4K .RED distribution format files and also decodes 720p or 1080p MP4 (H.264 / AAC) format files.

In stereo of course.

Thanks Steven for posting the image.. hopefully that will let people understand the difference.

And yes the projector is playing 4K 10bit each eye now.. has been for awhile now. The next couple weeks is hardcore integration time paring the Projector together with REDRAY as the RR ASIC is now out of the oven. ( all the RED RAYS we have demo'd in the past have been FPGA based ) It's getting close :)

unfortunately.. the escalating engineering work to get it done in time for the end of the year means we the projector will be absent from IBC this year. ( we couldn't get our big theater all the way to Amsterdam anyways ).. but if anyone is in town they are more than welcome to come see LOOM and others in 4K in the studio in hollywood ( after IBC )

This. Of course I'll be at NAB 2013 to see whatever you have to show there, but the wait has been killing me ever since I left the show this year.

Great film BTW, and the 3D was the most relaxing 3D I've ever seen. Can't wait to see it ghostless and in full 4K.

EDIT: ninja'd by Jarred.

Jarred you may have made my plans for my next vacation Heh Heh Heh

I couldn't resist (even though I'm a bit late on the chain)... I am so proud of this film and all it represents both in it's process and in it's final outcome. Jim and Jarred, you guys are animals. Straight up renegades. Working with y'all was truly inspiring and I can't wait for the next one!
