  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LOOM - ONLINE

Jarred has a special keyboard I swear ;)

4K authoring and mastering tools that maintain quality without DPX/EXR data rates will be most welcome.

While I will take your word that the REDRAY playback files will provide stunning quality at astonishingly low bit rates, is there any provision for a post friendly mezzanine codec?

As others have noted elements other than R3Ds are common in DI/post and so far that has meant dependence on DPX or OpenEXR formats to put it all together. They are fine formats but for 4K 24fps (not to mention HFR applications) post we are talking humongous data rates (roughly 1,200MB/s) that add time and expense penalties few producers can justify.

I'm not trying to be a nag, just looking for a codec that can enable 4K post at price points that will encourage more 4K mastering so I'll have something to watch on my REDRAY Projector ;-).

FWIW I think a robust codec that could maintain enough image integrity to satisfy heavy 4K post work at roughly 200MB/sec (slightly less than 2K DPX demands) would be a huge enabling technology for the creation of 4K content.

Projector starts rolling out end of the year to some select installations... we have a period of Field FCC testing that takes place before they can be shipped to random people. They should be in the store for normal purchase sometime in the first few months of 2013.

REDRAY as mentioned will be ahead of the projector...

Sounds good. I will try to remain content in my random existence until they hit the store. ;)

So does this rule out the possibility of being able to export out to RedRAY from our NLE's or encoding apps?

Don't the best quality DVDs/BluRays already come about from having the video transcoded in specified, stand-alone programs? Even exporting from Compressor versus Final Cut gets me better results.

A stand-alone "Anything in, RedRay compatible out" would be pretty standard and fit into current workflows, no?

Crossing my fingers that "Stand Alone" really means "Codec so you can compress in Adobe Media Encoder, Compressor, etc.", but I'm guessing that "Stand Alone" actually means "Single use program".

That's because we are the only ones that do simultaneous left and right eye projection in a single projector... the closest you can get is IMAX dual projectors in the really big IMAX theater. The normal left - right flashing that everyone else uses can turn your brain sideways.

Sony does simultaneous left and right eye 3D...

Also Jarred, I'm opening a movie theater in November and would be very interested in beta testing the Red projector :)

Yeah - you're probably right, and especially given that it needs a dedicated ASIC for playback - perhaps the RedRAY codec needs to be thought of as a final delivery high end format. ie, it's not a h264 that we send to a client over the web for approval.

However, I'm sure if I had a RedRAY Projector installed, I would love the option to spit out RedRay files directly from Premiere/AME/Resolve etc for client screenings and approval. Would sure beat creating a huge 4k file in another format that I then would need to re-transcode into RedRAY.

I'm guessing the projector is another reason to come to NAB 2013? Between that and the secret stuff Jim keeps teasing us about thinking it's time for another pilgrimage!

Hey Brad, I think there will be a few of us going over next year so chances are you won't be lonely!

It was cool walking out of the theater at NAB after seeing LOOM and running into Giovanni Ribisi. He was kind enough to shake my hand.

First chance I've had to see Loom. Couldn't make NAB this year. Can imagine how good this was on the RED Projector and REDray. Can't wait to see it in 3D when REDray is released.

Was there a thread about how it was produced which I missed? Lenses I assume where RED Pro Primes and Master Primes? Anyone got any information on the post process? Would love to know the stories behind Loom.

Great work Jarred. Very nice piece.

:))

I'm in a terrible connection so will probably only be able to view this in a couple of hours. However, this redray and projector information are really exciting: its definitely what we need to showcase what 4K is all about. I'll definitely try to get this as soon as possible! Just to confirm, Jarred: The red projector has a red ray player included, correct? Another question: with some manufacturers coming with 4K televisions, will the Red Ray Player be compatible with those? Any upgrade path planned for the output of the player, if, say, a new HDMI "2", or whatever comes that is compatible with 4K?

I'm going to NAB next year. it will be my first NAB. Seems like a good time to go there. My big concern will be customs: How am I supposed to get through customs with a red projector and my Epic upgraded to Dragon??? :)

Finally got to sit down and watch this! Amazing! Sad I couldn't see it in its full glory. Perhaps Red Studios could have another open house + screening? Either way definitely excited to know that redray & red projectors are coming along, can't wait.
