RED Epic shot on Nikon D800 using UV neon light tube.

NAB is around the corner....

Where is Dragon?

For a longer time nobody heard anything from RED officially...

So, we can understand that because the secret must be wrapped pretty strong before NAB....

Whatever happens I would expect the following:

1. Improved colour management and much wider colour gamut.

2. Dynamic range about two to three stops more...

3. Much much better IQ (Image Quality).

4. Totally new implementation of global shutter.

That's it for now.

Would be interesting to see what are other desires from RED Users...???

Can you post a crop of the center of the whiskey image to get an idea of detail ?

Sure Les,

I was looking for a softness of the image just try to evaluate a film stock anyway.

The image is as the original file without further colour processing or sharpening...

So per your request here we go

The grey square is a place of the crop.

100% square crop of the original image (900x900 pixels).

I went looking for Dragon once, but all I found was a reflection of myself throwing the peace sign in dew drop reflections.

I don't remember doing it. It was like a window into another dimension. (echo, echo, echo) Spooky stuff.

Image scale, click to open in new window/tab.

All fun aside. I have a sneaky suspicion that we'll be seeing and knowing a lot more about Dragon in 9 days.

Beside what we've already been told, which can be seen here, I think there will be more new features and very likely a few surprises that nobody expected.

For me, I'm really excited about the increased dynamic range, 6K, 5K in a S35 "window", IROLPF, clean ISO 2000, and a few other bits. I agree that the new color science is likely going to be pretty fancy stuff. It's been hinted at, but we haven't seen much yet.

I think Dragon has transformed a bit in it's initial inception during R&D and has evolved into a much larger monster. We all though it was a simple sensor upgrade, but the scale and scope clearly has grown to tackle other features.

Yeah Phil, Dragon should be something very exciting that I noticed here in my latest tread at the RED User...!!!!!!

Got any behind the scenes stuff to show us how it was done?

Shoot tiny reflective things. Wear a funny hat. Magnify to 100%. Profit.

6K for 6K

6K for 6K

6K for 6K upgrade.

14.5 stops of DR (conservatively counted)!!!!!

Wonderful!!!!

Now my question is:

What about colours just because we have got 6K sensor with Dragon

that means Chroma-SubSampling combined with a clever De-Bayer algorithms

should now work much easier to render a better colour (4:4:4:4) ?????

CHEERS!!!!!

14.5 stops of dynamic range? Where did you get this information?

CML wrote 15 stops of DR and I cut 0.5 just because that always works for me best.

So it should be 14.5.
