I'm based on the San Francisco Bay area and I'm looking for a desert landscape for a Fashion shoot, I'm willing to travel. Does anyone have some leads on some nice desert landscapes in CA, Northern is Preferred but I'm open to going further. I'm not looking for cacti or sand necessarily, I just need a barren landscape. Any input is appreciated.

if your looking for dunes... endless landscape check out glamis, its a bit far south but worth the drive

Have you checked out the various beaches near SF? Depending on a lot of things about your specific shoot, you could potentially give the impression of being in the desert.

Google earth and look around until you find what you need. LA / california surroundings must be the most documented in the world no?

Thanks for the input, I would have been more specific but I'm not 100% Sure of what I want. I think I will take the suggestion of looking at the beaches in my area first but I'm certainly open to travel. And yes there is an insane amount of imagery online and google art I'm sure but I'm also looking for places that are friendly for shooting. Thanks again everyone.

In my (limited) experience, you can get away with shooting on SF beaches if you keep your footprint small. If you have to have noticeable crew and equipment, you might want to be sure to get a permit.

Just remember, when shooting beaches in your area as deserts.... bring a coat! :D

I crossed the bay bridge once in summer and almost froze to death. Samuel was right! ;)

Except than he never actual said that. LOL

If it's sunny, it will probably be reasonably warm.

There were days.... I lived up there for about five years and there were days and nights when I would go over to the city from the East Bay - and holy crap it was freaking cold! :)

Does Marin also get those cold snaps?

Now, the other side of things - I was in Arizona last week - when it was 118 in the shade. Double dog hot!

Drive to Napa, not the vineyards. There are all kinds of landscapes, including burned out trees. Go off the map or use google map as Björn suggested.

Haha - nowhere in the Bay Area gets the same fog and cold patterns quite like the City itself. But there are good days, especially down near Ocean Beach, and into August and September the weather is reliably spectacular and, even so in the winter, when it's not raining.

You can tell the tourists in SF in the summer because they are the people wearing shorts.

My last thought for the OP is that, even if he gets a sunny day on the beach, it may be a bit windy which might not "sell" the desert idea quite as well.

When you get west of Vegas into the Mojave National Preserve, the desert flattens out and becomes quite vast. Lots of dry lake beds and very big skies.
