I often rig my camera with different modules attached to the brain, and I look at the 'lost' real estate on the top of those modules thinking wouldn't it be great...

Also the ¼-20 holes for mounting stuff to the modules give me a bit of concern since even when locked the modules wiggle just a little bit.

So - is anyone making Top Plates that cover the brain and modules? I understand that there would need to be different lengths:
Brain + MODULE ADAPTOR + PRO I/O MODULE
Brain + MODULE ADAPTOR + PRO BATTERY MODULE (DUAL)
Brain + MODULE ADAPTOR + PRO BATTERY MODULE (QUAD)

This longer top plate would give more holes to add accessories / more space for existing accessories & would solidify the attachment of the extra modules to the brain.

Just a thought.

The company that rhymes with schmooden schmamera has a top plate for the module adaptor and quad battery module.

There is a company that is doing it. The initials are WC. If I "say it," it will get replaced here on REDuser with an "X". Go figure.
PM me if it is not obvious.

I guess I'll have to PM you - since I can't find it...

Wait I now see what you are referring to on ligneous camera; but they are separate top plates for the battery module and module adapter. I'm interested in a continuos plate - one solid piece - front to back. I think this would be way sturdier.
Cost isn't a problem, nor is having different plates for different configs.

Yeah - different plates. You can strengthen them and "join" them by putting a LW 15mm Top Mount on each and connect those with rods.

If cost isn't an issue, you may be best off to take the plate you have to a local machinist, tell them what length you want to extend to and repeat the hole pattern, and have it made. It won't cost you a crazy amount more than what's out there already (though it very well may cost a little more, but, hell, it'll be custom made to your preferred lengths). The holes are very standard sizes, and it should be easy for any machinist to CNC out, or even make by hand.

It's an option that I considered - and may yet follow. I just figured I can't be the only one who is looking for this, and the makers of this sort of thing (ligneous et-al) that I've contacted have chosen to ignore my requests so far.

Terry - my latin is very bad, so google was my friend ;-)
best wishes and kind refards,

I would like to see something developed along these lines too - some thoughts that have emerged:

1. The brain is the only piece that has the M4 threaded holes on both the front and rear top as fastening points for the tactical top plate.

2. If you want to try using the 1/4-20's instead as fastening points on any modules behind the brain - a possible issue.
They only seem to be on the front end of the top of each module - not the rear - so one end will not get locked in.
However, there do seem to be enough "RED standard" threaded holes along the side (just below the top near where ribs would terminate) that could be used to secure a future product...
Perhaps RDC is concentrating on sensors and modules right now and something is in the works (Hint hint guys!)

3. Pro I/O has the VF cable connector in the top - so an opening needs to be there to accommodate.
(wish that connector was underneath where it could have been protected - with the added benefit of allowing an uninterrupted plate on top)

Edit: One real life issue is that all of the modules behind the brain hinge upwards - that means that if you have a top plate that covers all in one shot, you need to remove it entirely in order to change out any module behind the brain. That could turn into a real PITA very quickly.

Not really - Rarely do I change the config of the camera once the shoot day starts, and on those rare occasions where 2 set-ups are needed I have the cushion of time to switch over and /or a second body with an AC to help out.

Nobody wants to build this; or should I say, they'll build it as a one off and charge me a mint for it.
