Long Record Strategy Needed

Hey guys. So I'm new to the Scarlet club. So far I've been fine since all my takes are short and under 60 seconds. However, this coming weekend I'll be recording something for a full 60 minute shot. Audio will be from a completely different source far from the camera so sounds of fans won't be a problem, but that being said does anyone have any ideas on how best to be able to record for the full time without overheating the Scarlet. Planning to shoot at 3k24fps (to save space on the card) for 1080p delivery.

Is "overheating" your only concern? Run the fans at max, keep the camera under a shaded flag/umbrella, keep an ice pad nearby in case you are in an extremely hot place

Well overheating is my main concern from experience, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I should be worried about. Power is gonna be pulled from A/C sources so...

Would it make sense to record to an external recorder like a hyperdeck shuttle or something similar? or do you need the .r3d files?

you could rent the external recorder + hard drive and the final deliverable will be in 1080p and the file sizes much smaller. unless of course, you need the room to play with cropping.

edit: I also didn't realize the date and looks like you've already shot whatever it is you were shooting. what did you end up doing?

Haha it's perfectly alright Arthur. I ended up recording with the fans on at 100% and keeping the camera right underneath an A/C vent which thankfully was directly under where I needed it to be. And thankfully, audio was being recorded over 30 meters away so it didn't pick up the camera's fans at all. And I would have used an external monitor but I wanted the r3d files to tweak/ have just in case I needed to pull in a crop (which I ended up needing to do actually). However it was a successful record with only one hiccough in importing the footage later on into premiere.

Hi Nimish, the first week I was testing the new fan algorithms and new DSMC Fan 2.0 (both top and bottom) I burned several takes that were "very long".

The longest were both 1 hour and 25 minutes. I did this outside in our "LA summer". Didn't overheat at all, from I can observe the fan speed and sensor temperature were regulated pretty nicely. There was a subtle growth in the fan side in this extreme situation, but nothing that freaked me out.

Well when I first started ghosting the forums before my Scarlet officially arrived I noticed a lot of chatter on fans. So I just wanted to play it safe. Still new to this whole Red game.

I think if you set the fan to 100% you can go continuously. I'd me more worried about filling up REDmags, unless you've got a 256 (or 128gb but shot at 12:1 3kHD...check Phil's data chart to see if that would actually be 60mins worth).

A 128gig card at 12:1 got me 120 minutes of non-stop recording. I down-scaled to 14:1 for the last 30 minutes so I could fit everything, but I found it to be easy to keep the size down. (Note I shot at 3kHD 24fps)
