Hej Folks

Need your ebayers advice. Just today i opted in for a set of Lomo Anamorphics.
$1500 for three lenses (too good to be true innit?). Seller didn't have a "buy now" button
but a big email adress saying i should write a mail if i want to "buy now".

So i did. The offer disappeared from ebay and i got a mail saying:

The buy it now price for the item including shipping is $1,500. Transaction will be handled by ebay, so we can both be protected and able to exchange feedback after transaction is successfully closed!
I will offer a 30 days inspection period for the item, so if by any reason you are not satisfied with it, you can return it against a full refund! If you do want the deal, just please email me your full name, full shipping address, eBay user ID and I will start the transaction through ebay. You will be after contacted by eBay with further instructions on how to safely complete this sale.

So far, sounds great.

Then i sent my Infos an asked for some more fotos ... which i got:

(lokking on the fotos i thought ... too good to be true ;-)

The i got this mail, that appeared to be from ebay:

Points im not sure about:

1. Can it really be true gettin three lomo anas for 1500 ...?
2. Purchase can only be payed by Wester Union
3. Never saw such a Order Confirmation ... did you?
4. On the Ebay Offer, the Seller claimed to be in California, on the Confirmation it is London
5. Picture lokk a bit to clean w/o background (but havent found any similar pix on the web ;-)
6. I've bought a lot from ebay already ... but i never stumbled over something like this.

Do you have any advice ?

Funny ... i just talked with a ebay support agent in the live-chat ... and she said ... this transaction is fully okay. And the Dude seems to be a powerseller over at ebay ... she said i should buy with confidence ;-) ... shit ... im gettin paranoid here ... even asked her how i can be sure, that she is a real ebay-support agent ;-)

Ask her why the domain the email came from is not registered by eBay (or anyone). Doesn't make much sense.

You can also use Google Image Search to see if those photos are elsewhere on the web.

1) Go here: http://images.google.com/

2) Click the CAMERA ICON and choose "Upload an Image" and upload one of the photos he sent.

Google will search for visually similar images. It's a great way to see if people are just using photos they found online.

If it's too good to be true, it's a scam.

IT'S A SCAM!!!

These are images from a legitimate sale that went through a while ago.

Here's teh link... with the images you've posted - http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOMO-anamor...=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

If you think about it, why would anyone sell Lomo Anas at this price - it's simply a scam.

Ebay isn't very useful at spotting scams - don't forget the agent herself is not an expert in lenses or prices... so she will not understand the price difference... and she can be fooled easily by Ebay's own systems.

... and this is the link you mentioned that's now gone - http://www.ebay.com/itm/LOMO-anamor...=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

He's a 'power user' because the guy's account has been hijacked - that's what is often done in these cases... an account is hijacked and that gives a legitimate side (if you check with Ebay)... and that's how they fool the system.

Simply check the seller's history and see what they really sell (auto parts in the UK in this case) - and then see what the seller is supposed to be selling at the moment - you'll find hundreds of listings for high value items like segue-ways or printers or cycles etc... all designed to lure you in... on the back of scamming an unfortunate seller's account...

But, once these auctions are ended, they don't appear in the Seller's history (don't know why)...

It's always a good idea to contact the actual seller (ie the person who's listing it)... they often are unaware they're being scammed also.

Yeah, this would have made me very suspicious here:

Brandon, that's why I posted the link - I saw it myself a while ago :)

... I reported it... but who knows if Ebay really pay attention.

We need to police this ourselves and make everyone aware of this practice.

this is a complete scam, they are all over the pro camera and lens sections right now. ebay cant tell its a scam because they hack a reputable ebayers account, but then say to contact them personally and western union the money.
i know three people that never saw there lens or money again.
this is your final warning!

Yes, I've seen many (many) lenses and cameras recently... they're figured out the high prices these items go for and are scamming away...

Nut's ebay need to handle these kind of ads a bit quicker, no? It's so many out there it's crazy.

What the hell is ebay doing? I just wouldn't trust any of these auctions. Would never buy anything on ebay over a couple hundred dollars. Have you ever read any of these companies terms of service. I would suspect they would take forever to resolve any matter and then you are out your money for months. Just don't do it.
