  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Logan Lucky - 2017 Soderbergh's new film

I think their model for keeping the marketing budget low and having everybody participate is great. Of course there's no way they actually spent $29mil making it so it should turn out ok.
What if they did actually spend $29 million on making it? For Hollywood union films, this is low.

Great interview with SS by Amy Taubin over at 'Film Comment' ~

"AT ~ This movie looks like a big piece of pop art—specifically like a James Rosenquist—in the way the colors pop and in the huge close-ups of faces and objects of daily life. In the movies that you’ve shot yourself as Peter Andrews, there have been two basic color schemes—a blue one and a reddish-brown one. You use them to signify different story lines or different locations. And within that basic color frame, the images are pretty monochromatic, so that even if you have a yellow object in a blue shot, the yellow is muddied with blue. But in Logan Lucky, the colors really pop all the time. It’s not that you’re using a different camera. It’s still the RED EPIC, isn’t it?

SS ~ We were working in a different color space than we normally do. One of the many layers of experimentation of this project involved some things in postproduction that are sort of forward- looking in terms of how we are going to archive things. So we ended up in a color space that, when converted to the color space you use for projection, did some really interesting things that I hadn’t seen before. Initially there was some alarm from people on the post crew. I thought it looked great because certain colors were really exploding. And everyone was asking, “Do you want to desaturate that?” and I said, “No, I think it looks kind of cool.” It was a happy accident, and instead of backing off, I said let’s push it even further. There’s no rational reason why we should do that. But I think when we were looking at the first scene in the bar, I just thought this is going to work.

í would love to read more about this color space. Going to see it Saturday night.

My take from the Steven Soderbergh interview is that he is a Man For All Seasons... when it comes to movie making. That is, he is comfortable in film, digital, and at the forefront of what I take to be Hydrogen-like capture and presentation.

To be clear, I'm not sure he is on board for H.4v yet by some of the things he said. But it sounded like he is on board for using Hydrogen due to its size. And it also sounds like he is using something akin to branched story lines for his upcoming Mosaic movie, a style that I think Hydrogen will be very adept at shooting.

We can all talk about how this famous director or that famous director can do great work. But what I will always remember and respect is that Soderbergh was the first to use an R-1 prototype to shoot a major motion picture. And now he is at the forefront of shooting branched storylines and an app for the audience to choose which POV to follow.

I advocated for this very thing here on REDuser a year, maybe two years ago. Little did I know that he was probably working on that at the time.

I'm saying that in the REDuser World, Soderbergh should be anointed a KING OF THE THRONE.
