  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Location for RED Day...

RED Day invite?

RED Day invite?

I just wanted to check what the deal is with getting into the RED Day as I will be flying out from London so won't want a wasted trip! :emote_headwall:

Looking forward to it! Keeping my eyes open for registration details...

LOL... would agree with you unless you're flying Virgin America. Best domestic airline, hands down. And getting in and out of their LAX terminal is a breeze. Jet Blue out of Burbank is my close second.

Burbank isn't always an option depending on where people are coming from, or it requires a non-stop flight and often at a higher price than just flying into LAX.

Maybe I'm just desensitized from overexposure to crappy airports, but I'll take LAX any day over Houston or Miami.

Anyway, still trying to see if I can make it... I think I'm going to be in Phoenix around RED Day... Southwest is showing PHX to BUR for $59...

any idea what a cab ride from here to the event may cost? i'd prefer not to drive. again, im willing to split the cost of a room, and maybe car with someone.

For folks that are getting a car and don't mind 20 minutes or so of LA traffic, and want to stay close to the beach...

www.seashoremotel.com

www.baysidehotel.com

Both are typically right around $100/night. They're small, family-run joints that don't advertise. But they are both clean and nice. The Bayside is on the beach, and curiously enough is right beside Casa Del Mar... which is about $400/night. The Seashore is on Main St - great place for restaurants, bars, etc. But mellow... and 1 block from the beach.

Agreed, but nothing sucks quite as bad as JFK.

"Just waiting for the five heavies that have us blocked into the terminal to find someplace to park. We should be rolling long before we run out of fuel..."

CABFARE can cost more than airfare in LA ;)

LAX has SUPER SHUTTLES. Flat rate most anywhere. Probably $20-$25

Dean, if you are staying in Santa Monica you can count on a $40-$50 cab ride from either of those hotels. edit: my brother-in-law lives about three blocks from there and I live a 1/2 mile from the studio. It's not a cheap sober ride home ;)

LAX is fine as long as you land >9:00 AM and < 4:00 since LA traffic can be terrible on the 405 (and then the 10) or you're not in a hurry. However, if you're staying in any of the beach towns or want to experience them (Venice, Santa Monica, etc.) on a nice day, then arrival time doesn't matter too much traffic wise. You don't want to travel from London and leave the next day, do you?

Burbank is great, but far more limited in air service than LAX.

See my next post.

Red staff: If there is such a demand for hotel rooms, you must have connections with Cinegear, Paramount, etc's hospitality offices to arrange for group discounts at local hotels. This is not my favorite part of town, so I can't recommend any specific hotels other than to say ALL hotels are offering great group deals right now.

What's the time of this event? That might affect those who might want to fly in and out the same day.

I think I just might be making it out there for this. :D

No way! Only if you let the cab driver take you the way *he* wants to go. : ) I lived about a block from the Seashore for two years. It is a $24 cab ride +/- one or two dollars. God knows I took that cab ride enough times!

PLEASE LOOK AT NEW THREAD CALLED "RED DAY HOLIDAY."

I'm guessing that someone from out of town won't know which directions to tell the cab driver to take ;) edit: but I did see you are providing directions in your other thread. Good on ya!

Plus, the other consideration is traffic and depending on when RED Day begins it could take 20 minutes or it could take an hour. Just thinking about it as if I were budgeting for this, it could cost $24, but I'd rather be prepared for a bout of LA traffic and be pleasantly surprised if I make it for less. Not arguing, just want people to be aware that the 10 (or Venice, Pico, Olympic of Santa Monica) can all be fickle at times.

I want to throw in that - for those that are participating in the group buy-in at the Culver Hotel that I am arranging, I will be providing transportation to and from the Culver and Ren-Mar.

Basically, a big-ass van. ; )

I'll be the chauffeur, and I am a serious cutthroat in LA traffic. I can hang with the rudest and most ruthless Lexus Moms in the city. My primary vehicle is a 1996 Ford F-150 with 160K miles and body damage on every panel. I'm your basic sociopathic traffic anarchist.

Trust me - it will not take us an hour to get from the Culver to Ren-Mar.

I am not sure if I should be relieved or terrified by this.

Thanks Jim for setting this up! Exactly what I have been waiting for. The location is perfect. I am new to indie film. I just came away from the Warner Brothers VIP tour which was great. It's just good to be on a movie studio lot. I hope I can walk away from this knowing what to purchase in the next few months. Other then seeing "knowing" in a theater this will be my first time seeing raw RED footage on a theatrical screen! The competition for me is the Canon EOS 5D Mark II (but all the complaints about dropped frames and overheating is worrisome) and the Panasonic Lumix GH1 (but the video doesn't seem to hold up in comparison with alot of reviewers). Then there is RED ONE and the NEW & IMPROVED sensors. Now here is something out of left field. I am tired of watching US dollars going to China. It's sickening. With our deficit it is practically unamerican to not buy american. Will these cameras be built in the US? Probably not everyone will think of this but it is a factor for me.

anyone know what the parking is around there? is it private parking lots where i need to bring cash, meters i need to bring coins? need to show up early to find parking spaces? :driving:
