  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1. Monstro will be S35 form factor
2. Monstro will be have effective resolution of 5k
3. Integration will allow for 14 bit RAW data
4. DR will improve to between 12 to 13 stops
5. Frame rates will go right up to 300 fps using higher compression and possibly at a limited DR. This will rquire upgraded media and i/f boards.
6. An optional on-board processor will allow real-time downscaling to small-RAW, resulting in 2.5k RAW data.
7. The sensor will have integrated self-cleaning mechanism and anti-static design (similar to Canon's)
8. The upgrade will cost less than $4k

Much less / no sensor skew ("the sensor that that removes all limitations in current sensor technology", right?). Can work with unsynchronized strobes and flash photography.

Shouldn't this be in the Epic section since Monstro will be a free upgrade to Epic?

I agree. What else could it possibly be?

Why stick to s35mm when Red One and Epic already do this? Monstro is supposed to break all the rules when it comes to size and resolution.

My guess is 65mm size sensor or IMAX. Resolution will be 6 or 8K.

i will take higher fps and DR any day over more rez and limited lens sets. make a 3D camera jim!

i wont go for a 65mm size sensor..

Sensor Size: vistavision
Resolution: a 5k that gives a true 4k is nice.
DR: 14 stops or more.
noise: the issue with noise is that it looks nice as a still image.. noiseless.. but when played.. you get to see the noise. albeit its way better now.. but i guess it can get even better.
5k: 120 fps
4k: 160fps
3k: 200 fps
2k: 320 fps

less compression...

oh and... the option of shooting 16-bit RAW

This would be a camera that would blow and own film for good.

You guys are gonna be surprised... mark my words. Jim thinks big.

I'm with you on the Vista Vision thing, Akube. It's a great size for a sensor.

scaling in camera to achieve higher frame rates, non of this windowed sensor messing with optics.

actually I'm hoping EPIC will do this.

Either way, with a 37.72mm wide sensor (8-perf 35mm) or 52.48mm wide sensor (5-perf 65mm), you can't use PL-mount cine lenses.

The only advantage of the VistaVision size over the 65mm size is that you could use 35mm still camera lenses rather than medium format lenses.

I think they've made it clear that scaling RAW to lower-rez RAW in-camera is not going to happen. Besides, it seems to me that you'd just be moving the in-camera processing burden from one area to another, as opposed to sensor cropping, which is a very simple way of reducing the amount of data to be processed.

Yep. With something close to Vista Vision, 35mm still glass would be ready to go. I'm kind of thinking that's what Jim might be up to.

But who knows.. he might be thinking bigger... like cornering the IMAX market. ;)

If the RED ONE has 11.3 stops of DR, I should hope that the X sensors have at least 12-14 stops, meaning that the Monstro should have at least 16-18 stops. Considering film is up in the 17 stop range [it may not be useful for the last 3 stops... but technically it's there] and Monstro's supposed to best film... well...

As Epic is stated to hold a s35 sized sensor, dont you think any sensor larger than that would be kind of hard fit as an upgrade?

Plus that would mean changing your entire stock of PL mount lenses to something bigger and heavier. Is that really what Jim would think? Come on!

Now if you think about it. What was the subject of discussion just before Jim took a couple of days off, before announcing the new sensor?

Remember guys, sensor technology is largely independent of size. It's the sensor tech to be concerned with. You can make sensors as big or small as you want [within reason].

I think it is advisable to limit the sensor size because of imperfections in dye that can reduce the yield.

Sensor size should be DEPENDENT on type/size of lenses it can cover/use.

"There appears to be no specific mathematical relationship between the diameter of the imaging circle and the sensor size, although it is always roughly two thirds."

If that were true then we'd be seeing a lot more large sensors out there already.

...MONSTRO will eat GODZILLA

...MONSTRO will eat GODZILLA

MONSTRO

- S35 sized
- 6k > gives us a supertight 4k
- 500ASA rated
- 15 usable Stops
- 500fps@fullres
- global shutter
- new technology, might be cmos, but there is other stuff around...

...i think jim want's to outperform the nowadays KODAK Vision 3
OR the futures Vision 4 ;)
