  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LIVE: TACTICAL TOP PLATE 2.0

If you want to use the top fan with the 1.0 top plate, yes, it needs to be modified by RED.

I am thinking of ordering the new tactical top plate now...I already emailed your upgrade department but no answe yet...can I send in my original top plate after i get the 2.0 version and get the $150 later applied to other RED merchandise?

See my post #17 in this thread.

To clarify, RED does mod at no charge. Customer is responsible for shipping fees to and from RED.

What a bummer.... When I received all my EPICS (early adopter) , I needed top plates, RED did not have any top plates to sell for quite some time, so I had know other choice but to purchase VIEW FACTOR top plates.

So.... what do i do in this case. ? Will the new fans fit under my VIEW FACTER top plates? are all the woodern camera top plate users in the same boat... ?

Are we all having to buy RED top plates now...? throw our after market version in the bin.
I feel a little penalised, knowing that I was an early EPIC adopter (3) and and RED did not have top plates for sale at the time.

Brent , any ideas :)

Mark, I cannot speak to what third party plates will work. When we develop something, we test compatibility with Red gear - unless the product is specifically developed to work with a third party (say, the Canon mount).

When we released early EPIC-Ms, sure, would have been great if every single accessory anyone could ever want was available at that time. Great, but also an impossible task. 20/20 hindsight, right?

We can only control what we can control - hence us offering either to modify the 1.0 top plate version or trade-in credit for 1.0 to move into 2.0. Heck, most companies, even with their OWN gear, would make you toss the 1.0 and buy the 2.0.

And not to forget that no one is forcing us to upgrade the fans...RED is giving us the option to choose new fans...it's almost like a new accessory...we cannot expect them to give to us for free....it just happens that this "accessory" requires us to have a different top plate to use it...at least that's how I look at it. ;)

Personally I love you guys for doing the mods - I would totally understand if things got to a point where it was too much of a pain and just didn't offer it up. You guys have so many things on your plate and a new top plate, while an extra couple of $, should be easy to replace. Particularly since most of us have been working and enjoyed good life out of the current ones.

#R3D ... Go RED!

mmmm..... :( Still curious why these little shops could put out top plates, handles, side rails, base plates many months ahead of you. Most of these guys where 1 and 2 man shops, pumping out great quality plates in very little time? Took you guys forever to get things out.. Even now, a V-LOCK back pack has only just been released, Ive had one from those little guys for over 18months now. What actually holds you guys up on such simple items.

Imagine if you guys did get into manufacturing your accessories sooner rather than later. x, View factor and all the little accessory shops probably wouldn't even exist now... You technically made them exist.
What slows you guys down so much compared to them? internal politics?

I'd prefer to buy RED products by the way... But you do make it hard for me to do so, especially when these other guys are getting RED brackets and things out in the market place months, sometime a year before you.

Anyways, I get your point, understand an appreciate the reply... and still a RED fan.

Thanks Brent.

Mark,

I understand your position. I too have the view factor top plate. I see all this as wages of war. Brook developed the top plate during our Spider-Man days.
The question is 'do we want Red to release a major camera before all the accesories or wait another year'

That is what would have been the case. Look at Zacuto and Redrock. When Canon changes designs do those companies give away the mods to update.

It's a tough call and I never ever think of you as not having furthered the Red cause
