  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lithium driving...sweet!

My first car will be 100% electric. Without any gas engine you can save a lot of weight. But I'm actually not looking for a compact car. Double or triple the battery capacity even if it ends up being the size of a minivan or SUV to fit all the batteries.

And I told myself 6 years ago I would never buy another gas car again.... :)

You are a trailblazer, no doubt about it. But this is definitely "money down the drain". You can however provide valuable data for the car developers. Is that your electricity, or is someone else paying for it?

Not if you keep it and put 200k on it. then it pays for it's total sticker price with some change left over. That's the nice thing about electric, it's so cheap to run that at a point in the future all the money you spent up front gets paid off. The more you drive the more you save. :)

the day i can drive out to my ranch (that's 110miles each way) and through the mud and mountains......AND pull a trailer behind.....will be the day i go electric. Funny, why is fuel so expensive in the states and Europe? i was just in Ecuador where gasoline was 1.06usd per gallon. I think it's 50c/gal in Venezuela.....don't answer w/ that's supply and demand...

about 3 hours on 240v, overnight on 110.

40 miles a charge, I am doing about 50 or so miles a day by keeping it on the charger ALL the time when not driving, Local Utilities are installing a $2000 240v charger at no cost so they can monitor usage for 24 months then I get the equipment for free after. No upcharge on electric costs.

Looking at going all solar with a 10kw system for the car, I never run more then about 10kw a day of juice. That would be about 12 175w panels I think to cover it.

That's sick. Me want one.

Most of my shoots are at least 60-120 miles round trip. I probably carry 500 pounds of gear.
Lately my shoots have been 80-100-200 miles away. Not far enough to fly but a 30 mile
car would never work for me. I would love to seem them develop
a car where the whole body is a solar cell.
If you run out of battery power, is it just a flick of a switch to use the gas engine?
How big is the gas tank?

Couple of factors, one we buy oil on the open market so we pay what it costs, a lot of big oil producing countries heavily subsidize the price based on their oil revenue to the state. Secondly we pay for our road infrastructure through gas partly instead of hiding it in sales and income taxes.

SIM-LEI electric car

SIM-LEI electric car

Here's a prototype electric vehicle that can do 200 miles on a single charge, and 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. It's a 260 kilowatt car, with a 65 kilowatt motor in each wheel instead of a central one under the hood/bonnet. It's planned to go into production in 2013.

What is the lifespan of battery and how much cost new one? ... There is also interesting question if we replace lot of cars with battery one, if we haveenough quantities of rare elements on our planet? But we will find the solution. Future of cell phones is battery less.

Thats looking pretty far in the Future, what exactly will the cellphone of the future run on if not battery power.

So if I can just figure out how to re direct the50kw onboard generator I can run set with it andleave the 90kw behind . Lol

They say 300k lifespan on the cells. Or about 16 years

Oh man it's fun to have full remote control of car via the cell network. Can turn it on and off heat it up cool it down check state of charge have it text me when charge is done.

They are researching powering thru the several oscilating generators, so as you are moving or walking with you phone or even just have it on a dashboard of you car etc there will be specific generator for specific range of oscilations. Its same like in self winding wirst watches, but they work only on your hand.

16 years? really?? That will be great.
Ok, but in this case how big capacity they will have after 4, 8 or 16 years? 90%, 70% and 40%?

Priuses have been running for hundreds of thousands of miles without any significant battery decline yet. My guess is if you have an electric car in 16 years and need to replace the battery you'll be able to buy a new one for pretty damn cheap.

How much does a new transmission cost? Timing belt? Exhaust? Alternator? Fuel pump? There are a lot of things to go wrong in a device which handles thousands of little explosions every minute. The price of a transmission hasn't really gone down in 16 years. In 16 years lithium Ion packs equivalent to the one in a Chevy Volt will be a few hundred bucks.

You have to start thinking of car parts like you do computer parts. Yes that video card might die in 4 years, but if you wanted to replace it with an identical one, it'll cost 1/10th what it does today. There's an entire computer and phone industry out there pouring billions of dollars into electric car technology now in the form of iPhone and Laptop batteries. And thank God, because there isn't nearly enough investment from the automotive side to do that.

I'm not trying to be negative here, but looking for some honest information. I just heard something on talk radio about the NHTSA having some problems with "thermal events". Is this a serious concern, or another "faulty accelerator pedal" mess?

The latter.

If you are in a severe crash and your car is rolled over... and you sit in the car for 3 days - 3 weeks, you might then die in a fire if you haven't already died from dehydration/blood loss and or exposure. Also if a crazy axe murderer hacks through the battery case and starts going to town and you don't promptly exit the vehicle... and the crazy axe murderer doesn't kill you first... you might die in a fire, unless you leave when the battery pack starts smoking.

Essentially none of the 'incidents' have been sudden and all have been the result of extraordinary damage to the battery pack, deliberate attempts at short circuiting and rolled vehicles. In any situations where such an accident occurs you would probably be at a high risk of a gasoline powered vehicle similarly bursting into flames due to a fuel tank rupture. And the solution is the same... exit the vehicle. Keep a safe distance.
